Ukraine Claims Breakthrough That Neutralizes Russia’s “Unstoppable” Glide Bombs Almost Overnight
Electronic Enigma: How Ukraine’s Revolutionary Lemur Quant Jammer Neutralized Russia’s “Unstoppable” Glide Bombs Overnight

In the brutal chess match of modern warfare, few weapons have struck more fear into the hearts of defenders than Russia’s adjustable aircraft bombs, commonly known as KABs. For a long time, these guided glide bombs were hailed by Kremlin officials as “unstoppable,” and on the ground in Ukraine, that boast felt like a grim reality. These munitions—massive, precision-guided explosives capable of leveling reinforced bunkers and entire city blocks—have been a cornerstone of Russian strategy, dropped by the thousands month after month. However, the battlefield has just undergone a seismic shift. In what many are comparing to the breaking of the Enigma code in World War II, Ukraine has unveiled a new electronic warfare (EW) system that has effectively neutralized these threats, turning Russia’s most sophisticated bombs into little more than “useless scrap”.
To understand the magnitude of this breakthrough, one must first appreciate the sheer destructive power of the KAB. Often described as Russia’s equivalent to the American JDAM, the KAB is a “smart” upgrade to a standard “dumb” bomb. By fitting these munitions with steering fins and satellite-powered guidance systems, Russia transformed them into precision tools capable of hitting targets within a 20-meter margin of error . The range on these weapons is equally impressive; while some travel 40 miles, the most advanced models equipped with UMPK guidance modules can glide for up to 120 miles . This allows Russian pilots to launch their payloads from the safety of their own airspace, well out of reach of most Ukrainian air defenses, only to watch as the bombs steer themselves toward Ukrainian fortifications, schools, and residential buildings.
The warheads themselves are terrifying. While the 500-pound variants are common, Russia has increasingly relied on the “blockbusting” KAB-1500, which carries over 3,000 pounds of explosives . Upon impact, these giants create craters 50 feet wide, designed specifically to crush hardened concrete targets. Because they fly at high speeds and lack a thermal signature, they are notoriously difficult to shoot down with conventional surface-to-air missiles. Throughout 2024 and 2025, the frequency of these strikes reached a fever pitch, with over 1,300 bombs dropped in a single week in October 2025 alone .

For the Ukrainian Defense Forces, the only way to survive was to innovate. They identified the “Achilles heel” of the KAB: its reliance on satellite navigation . If the signal between the satellite and the bomb could be severed, the “smart” bomb would revert to being a “dumb” one, veering off course and landing harmlessly in empty fields. This sparked a “feverish, frantic back-and-forth” technological arms race . Initially, Ukraine used jammers to counter Russia’s Kometa-4 antenna systems. Russia responded by upgrading to the Kometa-8, which could cancel out up to seven jammers at once. Russia eventually pushed their technology even further, creating systems that remained functional even when targeted by over 100 jammers.
Just when it seemed Russia had won the electronic battle, Ukraine introduced the “Lemur Quant”. Developed in conjunction with the elite “Nightwatch” EW unit, the Lemur Quant represents a paradigm shift in electronic warfare. According to company spokespersons, the impact was immediate and total. In one sector covering 700 kilometers of the front, Russia dropped 869 KAB bombs in a single month. Under the protective umbrella of the Lemur Quant, the results were staggering: only eight servicemen suffered minor injuries . For Russia, this represents an “abject, humiliating failure”—a colossal waste of money and resources for zero tactical gain.

The Lemur Quant works by inducing a “navigation error” so severe that Russian pilots found their guidance systems failing 100 kilometers before even reaching the line of combat . But the system’s prowess isn’t limited to glide bombs. Its predecessor, the Lemur EW, has already proven capable of bringing down Russia’s fastest and deadliest missiles, including the Khinzal. These “hypersonic” missiles, capable of reaching Mach 10, were previously thought to be almost impossible to intercept. In a display of technological dominance and psychological warfare, Ukrainian engineers even programmed the jammers to replace the missiles’ navigation signals with a famous Ukrainian anthem, “Our Father is Bandera,” sending the multi-million dollar missiles spiraling into the ground to the tune of their enemy’s music .
However, the rollout of the Lemur Quant has not been without internal challenges. The system is so powerful that it is “friend-foe agnostic,” meaning it jams everything in its vicinity—including Ukrainian reconnaissance drones . This has led to friction between EW units and frontline brigade commanders who rely on drones for combat operations. Despite these logistical hurdles and even unfounded complaints of corruption intended to slow the project down, the Lemur Quant is now in active use. Its creators claim it is currently the “only system in the world” capable of suppressing Russia’s new Kometa antennas at such vast distances .

As Ukraine continues to broaden the coverage of this “invisible yet impenetrable electronic shield,” the strategic landscape of the war is changing. While military experts urge caution—knowing that Russia will eventually attempt to adapt—for the moment, Ukraine has gained vital “breathing room.” The “unstoppable” threat that once rained death from above has been silenced by the quiet power of electronic energy. This innovation not only protects soldiers and civilians but also allows Ukraine to pivot its focus toward destroying Russia’s own critical infrastructure, signaling a new chapter in the conflict where the smartest technology, not the biggest bomb, dictates the winner.
