Patrick Mahomes Reflects on His High School Days: “I Think a Lot of Students Can Relate”
Before becoming a three-time Super Bowl champion and one of the NFL’s brightest stars, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes was just another student at Whitehouse High School in his hometown of Whitehouse, Texas. In a recent interview, Mahomes opened up about his high school experience, his passion for sports, and how those formative years shaped the athlete—and person—he is today.

Humble Beginnings in Whitehouse, Texas
Mahomes, now 29, fondly recalls his days at Whitehouse High School. “I just really loved sports,” he said. “Definitely competitive, and always working to get better. I think a lot of students can relate to just wanting to work hard and have fun.”
The future NFL MVP was involved in multiple sports and drew inspiration from classic sports movies, with *Remember the Titans* topping his list of favorites.
Friday nights under the stadium lights were especially memorable for Mahomes. “I know a lot of my memories were on Friday nights under the lights. There’s no feeling like it, especially in Texas high school football,” he shared, highlighting the unique excitement and camaraderie of playing for his school team.
Giving Back: T-Mobile’s Friday Night 5G Lights Campaign
Today, Mahomes is the face of T-Mobile’s Friday Night 5G Lights campaign alongside former NFL star Rob Gronkowski. The initiative aims to give small-town schools across the country a chance to win major upgrades for both athletic and academic programs.
Mahomes emphasizes the importance of supporting local communities: “Growing up in a small town, you know every dollar of support helps. I’m grateful to be a part of this incredible program with T-Mobile where we can support some deserving schools across the country.”

Working with Gronkowski, who won four Super Bowls during his own NFL career, has been a highlight for Mahomes. “He’s got so much energy and just loves the game,” Mahomes said. “Gronk’s all about supporting athletes and having fun, so it really matched the spirit of Friday Night 5G Lights.”
High School Sweethearts: Meeting Brittany
It was at Whitehouse High School that Mahomes met his now-wife, Brittany. The couple graduated in 2014 and have built a family together, with three children. Mahomes went on to play college football at Texas Tech University before being drafted into the NFL in 2017.
Looking Ahead: Chiefs’ Redemption Season
After a disappointing loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in the 2025 Super Bowl, which ended Kansas City’s hopes for an unprecedented NFL three-peat, Mahomes and the Chiefs are gearing up for a comeback. However, Mahomes isn’t calling it a “revenge tour.”
“Whenever you lose, you kind of have this taste in your mouth that you want to go out there and revenge that, or whatever you want to say,” Mahomes said in a July 7 interview with Up & Adams. “I feel like I’ve had to sit back and just listen to people talk and talk, and I’m like, ‘Let’s just play football and just handle it all out there.’”

Staying Grounded
Despite his superstar status, Mahomes remains grounded and connected to his roots. His story—from small-town Texas to NFL legend—resonates with students and athletes everywhere. As he continues to inspire on and off the field, Mahomes proves that hard work, humility, and a love for the game never go out of style.
Patrick Mahomes’ journey is a testament to the power of perseverance, community, and staying true to yourself—no matter how bright the lights get.
