Dylan Raiola Breaks Silence on Backlash Over His Bond With Patrick Mahomes
As the Nebraska Cornhuskers prepare for their season opener against Cincinnati on August 28, 2025, at Arrowhead Stadium, quarterback Dylan Raiola finds himself in the spotlight—not just for his on-field talent but for his well-documented connection to Kansas City Chiefs star Patrick Mahomes. The sophomore quarterback, who led Nebraska to a 7-6 record in his freshman season, has faced criticism for what some fans perceive as excessive emulation of the three-time Super Bowl champion. In a recent interview on Hail Varsity, Raiola opened up about his relationship with Mahomes, addressing the criticism while emphasizing the genuine mentorship that has developed between the two.

Raiola, a former five-star recruit, first crossed paths with Mahomes through their shared training connections in Texas. “We kind of train with the same people,” Raiola explained. “We were in Texas at the same time and kind of crossed paths. I had the opportunity to kind of watch him just throw. Talked to him, introduced myself, and like any other person, he’s just a normal guy. Respects and likes to relate to other people. That was kind of the first time we met.”
The initial comparisons between Raiola and Mahomes were surface-level, with fans noting similarities in their appearance, including Raiola’s hairstyle and their shared jersey number, No. 15. Mahomes himself acknowledged the resemblance, calling it “cool” in a lighthearted response. However, Raiola revealed that their bond goes far deeper than aesthetics. During a second meeting in Texas, Mahomes made a significant gesture by offering his phone number to the young quarterback. “That was kind of like shook me up because I should be asking him for his number,” Raiola said with a laugh. “But he gave it to me. I’m just so grateful for that, to add to another guy that I can reach out to for advice.”

This mentorship has become a cornerstone for Raiola as he navigates his college career. While critics have argued that Raiola’s admiration for Mahomes—evident in his pregame rituals, hairstyle, and playing style—may border on imitation, the Nebraska quarterback views it as a valuable learning opportunity. “I just think ever since, it’s been him supporting and I’ve been supporting him because at the end of the day, I’m still a fan of football,” Raiola said. “Whether it’s him, whether it’s Matthew [Stafford], whether it’s Joe Burrow, Josh Allen, like, I just like watching good quarterback play, and I think you can learn something from every single guy.”
The depth of their relationship was highlighted last January when Raiola was spotted in the Kansas City Chiefs’ locker room after their AFC Championship win. Chiefs running back Isiah Pacheco even jokingly compared Raiola to Mahomes, underscoring the camaraderie between the two quarterbacks. “I’m grateful for that relationship,” Raiola said. “I know it’s something that people don’t get very often, and it’s something I don’t take for granted.”
While their conversations often extend beyond football, Raiola credits Mahomes’ work ethic as a key influence. “If there’s one thing I’ve learned from that relationship with Patrick Mahomes, it’s the work ethic that he approaches the game with,” he noted. This lesson is particularly relevant as Raiola, who threw for 2,819 yards, 13 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions in his freshman season, aims to elevate his performance in 2025 under the guidance of head coach Matt Rhule.
With Mahomes expected to attend Nebraska’s season opener at Arrowhead Stadium, the spotlight on Raiola will only intensify. Yet, the young quarterback remains focused on forging his own path while cherishing the guidance of his mentor. “It just so happens to be that my guy is three hours down the road,” Raiola said, emphasizing the unique opportunity to learn from one of the NFL’s best.
As Raiola prepares to lead the Cornhuskers into the new season, his relationship with Mahomes serves as both a source of inspiration and a reminder of the hard work required to succeed. For Nebraska fans, the connection between the two quarterbacks is a promising sign of Raiola’s potential to bring the program back to its former glory.
