WNBA veteran Courtney Williams isn’t holding back — and this time, her words are lighting a fire under an already-heated debate.
In a candid and now-viral moment, Williams responded to a question about the pay disparity between WNBA and NBA players with raw honesty:
“We feel like used tampons out here.”
Blunt. Graphic. And impossible to ignore.
Calling Out the System
Williams’ frustration is rooted in a growing sentiment among WNBA players: they’re expected to deliver elite-level performances, promote the league, and represent a global brand — all while being underpaid, overworked, and, often, overlooked.
The contrast is jarring. While top NBA stars rake in tens of millions in salary and endorsements, most WNBA players make a fraction of that — with many forced to play overseas during the offseason just to stay financially afloat.
“We’re sacrificing just as much, putting in just as much work. But when it comes time for the checks to hit? It’s like we don’t matter,” Williams added in a follow-up post.
A Boiling Point in the CBA Era

This isn’t just about dollars and cents — it’s about respect, investment, and how women’s sports are valued in the professional arena. The WNBA’s collective bargaining agreement (CBA) negotiations are looming, and comments like Williams’ could spark a new wave of pressure on the league to deliver real change.
Many players have spoken out about the lack of charter flights, the inequity in facilities, and the marketing gaps that hold back their visibility — and earning potential.
Williams, however, is one of the few who chose to be this explicit and unapologetic.
Fans React: Too Far or Finally Honest?
As expected, the internet had opinions.
Some fans praised Williams for saying what others won’t, calling her a “truth-teller” who “put into words what every player feels.” Others criticized the phrasing, saying it detracted from an important issue with unnecessary shock value.
“It’s a harsh metaphor, but maybe that’s what it takes to get people to listen,” one fan tweeted.
“She’s not wrong — she’s just the one brave enough to say it that way,” wrote another.
What’s Next?
With growing public support for WNBA players and more stars speaking out, the league faces mounting pressure to take action. Whether or not Courtney Williams’ quote becomes a rallying cry or a lightning rod, one thing’s for sure:
She’s got people talking.
And sometimes, that’s where real change begins.
