Dawn added more to the interview, highlighting her grip on her players. “We’re not going to change anything. But certainly when Tessa’s shooting as well as she’s doing and playing, like defending as well as she is, we’re going to find some more minutes for her because that’s what her production says.”

Staley, no doubt, has her own way of dealing with defeats. She guided her team to bounce back effectively from their sole regular-season loss in November against UCLA. Staley acknowledged the tough loss by pointing out that they experienced what they usually inflict on their opponents.

Johnson was injured during South Carolina’s victory against then-No. 9 N.C. State on November 10. Before that, she contributed 15 points in the team’s 68-62 season-opening win over Michigan on November 4 this season. But after her fierce comeback on Sunday against the Mississippi, Tessa played 22 minutes in the game, securing 22 points for the team, leading to a massive victory 95-68 over MS State.

The 6-foot guard from Albertville, Minnesota, played a pivotal role in the NCAA Tournament championship game last April, leading the Gamecocks with 19 points in their 87-75 triumph over Iowa.

Tessa showcased incredible readiness and confidence this season, always prepared to take the shot when the opportunity arose. Even HC post-game with the Mississippi had the same to convey in the Fox interview: “Tessa was just lights out,” coach Dawn Staley said. “Tessa was locked, loaded and ready to shoot the ball. Her focus goes to another level when we’re down. She seems to hit big shots when we’re down.”
