Forward Angel Reese recorded yet another double-double on Tuesday night, but her Chicago Sky fell to the Las Vegas Aces 90-71 in blowout fashion on the road.
Reese finished with 12 points on 4-of-12 shooting to go along with 16 rebounds, three assists and two steals. It marked her ninth double-double in the past 10 games and her 25th of the season, which extended her rookie record.
The former LSU’s star’s performance came on the heels of her setting the WNBA single-season rebounding record Sunday with 19 boards in a loss to the Minnesota Lynx.
Reese surpassed the previous record of 408 held by Sylvia Fowles, and Reese is trending toward being the first player in WNBA history with 500 points and 500 rebounds in a single season. She has 438 points and 434 rebounds with seven games to go.
Given the historic stat line Reese has garnered this season, she received plenty of praise on social media Tuesday night after another strong individual effort:
Unfortunately for Reese and the Sky, her play has not led to much team success of late, as Chicago has now lost seven consecutive games, dropping it to 11-22 on the year.
Despite that, the Sky remain in the thick of the playoff race, as they are eighth in the league, tied with the Atlanta Dream, who are also 11-22.
The top eight teams in the WNBA qualify for the playoffs, and the first seven spots have been locked in. That includes the Indiana Fever led by Rookie of the Year front-runner Caitlin Clark, who clinched a playoff spot Tuesday despite being idle.
While the ROY battle between collegiate rivals Clark and Reese has been among the biggest talking points for WNBA fans this season, the Sky’s recent losing ways likely have Reese playing catch-up at this point.
Reese’s 13.3 points and 13.2 rebounds per game would be more than enough to capture Rookie of the Year honors in most seasons, but Clark is putting up historic numbers in her own right as the No. 1 overall pick, averaging 18.7 points, 8.4 assists, 5.6 rebounds and 1.4 steals.
There had also been talk of Clark and Reese being in the MVP race, but A’ja Wilson may have made it an open-and-shut case Tuesday.
The Aces superstar center was dominant again, leading all scorers with 30 points on 10-of-19 shooting to go along with 14 rebounds, three assists, three blocks and two steals.
Wilson now has eight games this season with at least 30 points and 10 boards, and the 2024 Olympic gold medalist for Team USA is well on her way to third WNBA MVP Award in the past five seasons.
As for Reese, her next chance to add to her historic season and move closer to the elusive 500-500 points and rebounds mark will come Friday against the Los Angeles Sparks.
