Caitlin Clark’s Wild Pregame “Airmail”: Hits the Crowd and KK in the Face, but Fever Stay Unfazed
In what quickly became the most talked-about warm-up moment of the WNBA season, Indiana Fever rookie Caitlin Clark sent a stray pass flying into the stands—and then watched in horror as it came right back to smack veteran teammate Kahleah “KK” Copper on the cheek.

What Happened
Approximately 15 minutes before tip-off at a packed Gainbridge Fieldhouse, Clark was running through her usual shooting drills. Spotting an open lane, she attempted a no-look lob to Copper cutting toward the basket. Instead, the pass soared over KK’s outstretched hands, clanged off the metal seat of a first-row spectator, and ricocheted upward. Copper, standing just inside the arc, was grazing the jersey of her opponent when the ball bounced back into her face, leaving her momentarily stunned.
At the same time, farther up in Section 108, a season-ticket holder also took a glancing blow from the ricochet. Security and team medical staff converged on both Copper and the fan, who were quickly checked for injury.
Immediate Reactions
Clark, crimson-faced and apologetic, raced toward Copper and the fan as trainers assessed them.
“I honestly felt it first in the stands,” Clark recounted afterward. “Then I saw it hit KK square in the jaw. My heart just dropped. I’m so sorry to both of them—definitely not how I planned my warm-up.”
Copper, known for her toughness and sense of humor, waved off concerns with a laugh.
“If you’re going to get clocked, better get clocked by the cannon of Caitlin Clark,” she quipped. “I’m fine—just a bruise and a story I’ll never forget. But wow, she’s got rockets in those arms.”
The fan in Section 108 was escorted to the medical booth, treated for a minor bump on the head, and released within ten minutes. “I told them I’m good and to save my seat for the playoffs,” the fan joked on the way out.

Coach and Team Perspective
Head coach Marianne Stanley played down the incident in her pregame media session.
“Pregame mishaps happen—we’ve all seen a stray ball here and there,” Stanley said. “No harm done. Caitlin checked in right away, KK shook it off, and the fan was cleared. Now we turn our attention to tonight’s game.”
Veteran guard Aari McDonald added, “We’ve got each other’s backs out here. Caitlin knows she overthrew it, and KK knows it was an accident. We moved on in two seconds—nothing will shake our focus.”
Game Night Context
The Fever entered Tuesday’s contest riding a three-game win streak and looking to cement their position in the playoff hunt. With star forward Aliyah Boston sidelined by an ankle tweak, Copper’s leadership and Clark’s breakout scoring have become even more crucial.
After the warm-up incident, Clark and Copper went through the remainder of their routine in good spirits, high-fiving staff and fans as they jogged off the court for final pregame stretches. When Indiana took the floor for tip-off, neither showed any visible discomfort.
Broader Reactions
Social media lit up as clips of the ricochet went viral on X (formerly Twitter) and Instagram. Fans dubbed it the “pregame airmail,” while some even brought T-shirts reading “I Survived Caitlin’s Warm-up” to tonight’s game. Clark responded on her own X account: “Note to self: keep the passes on the floor 😂 Sorry KK & Section 108—love y’all!”
The Game Outcome
Despite the early warm-up drama, the Fever delivered a strong performance, defeating their Eastern Conference rival 87–79. Clark finished with 24 points, 7 assists and 5 rebounds, while Copper chipped in 18 points and 9 boards. The win extended Indiana’s home unbeaten streak to nine games.

Looking Ahead
With the All-Star break approaching, Indiana hopes to keep its momentum rolling. Clark’s confidence remains sky-high, and the team’s chemistry looks as strong as ever—bumps, bruises and all. “We’re a family,” Copper said. “Even when things get a little wild, we’ve got each other’s backs. Now let’s get ready for more wins.”
And as for Clark’s pregame cannonball passes? “I might stick to chest passes for a bit,” she laughed after the game. “Or maybe just aim lower.”
