BREAKING: The International Hockey Federation (IIHF) has fired referee Francois St. Laurent, who officiated Game 6 between the Oilers and Panthers, after surveillance footage captured him sharing his sports betting. 2
The world of professional hockey has been rocked by a scandal of historic proportions. The International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) has officially terminated veteran referee Francois St. Laurent after surveillance footage surfaced allegedly showing him sharing his personal sports betting account with a known professional poker player — during Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Final between the Edmonton Oilers and the Florida Panthers.

The footage, captured from a private officials’ lounge inside the arena, reportedly shows St. Laurent entering the room during a commercial break, accessing his phone, and handing it to a man later identified as a high-stakes poker professional under ongoing investigation.
According to sources within the IIHF, the account displayed on the screen belonged to St. Laurent and showed live bets being adjusted mid-game, suspiciously favoring the Panthers — who ultimately won the game and clinched the championship.
The IIHF released an emergency statement early this morning:
“The IIHF maintains zero tolerance for corruption and game manipulation. After a thorough review of verified surveillance and digital activity logs, we have concluded that Referee Francois St. Laurent acted in a manner that directly compromised the integrity of the game. He is hereby permanently banned from any IIHF-related officiating or activity.”
This revelation comes amid already widespread controversy surrounding Game 6’s officiating, which saw multiple highly debated calls benefit the Panthers, including a questionable third-period penalty on Edmonton, a disallowed goal, and inconsistent enforcement of faceoff violations.
Now, with this new evidence, many believe the outcome of Game 6 — and possibly the entire series — may have been influenced by a referee acting with conflicted financial interests.
The fallout has been immediate and fierce. Oilers fans have taken to social media with hashtags like #Game6Rigged and #BanStLaurent, demanding a full investigation not only by the NHL and IIHF, but also by legal authorities and sports integrity watchdogs. Several Canadian lawmakers have also weighed in, calling for criminal probes and international oversight into the scandal.
Former players and analysts are equally disturbed. On a TSN broadcast, former NHL defenseman PK Subban said:
“This isn’t just bad officiating — this is betrayal. If what they’re saying is true, it’s a disgrace to the game, to the players, and to every fan who’s ever believed in fair competition.”
While the IIHF has jurisdiction over international hockey rules and oversight, it is now working in coordination with the NHL Integrity Unit, Interpol, and gaming regulators in the United States and Canada to determine the extent of the wrongdoing and whether others may have been involved.
The unnamed poker player at the center of the scandal has reportedly been banned from entering league facilities and may face legal charges if a connection between betting activity and in-game outcomes can be established.
As for the Oilers and their fans, this news only deepens the heartbreak. Having fallen short of Stanley Cup glory for the second consecutive year against the Panthers, many now question whether the dream was stolen — not just lost.
As the investigation continues to unfold, the IIHF promises full transparency in what is now being called the largest officiating scandal in modern hockey history.
