Caitlin Clark secures single-season WNBA rookie scoring mark

Caitlin Clark’s historic rookie season continued on Sunday night.

During a career-high scoring performance of 35 points in the Indiana Fever‘s 110-109 Sunday afternoon victory over the Dallas Wings, Clark surpassed Seimone Augustus’ single-season rookie scoring record.

Clark moved to 761 points in 39 games, overtaking Augustus’ 744 points in 34 games with the Minnesota Lynx during the 2006 season.

For Clark, it was a full-circle moment. She grew up watching and admiring Augustus. Augustus was also the first WNBA player Clark ever met as a kid.

“I got my picture with her on my dad’s little phone. It was maybe like a BlackBerry back in the day. I vividly remember it. I was always a fan of her game and the way she could shoot the ball,” Clark said.

Clark connected on 10-of-22 shots, including 6-of-14 3-pointers during the win over the Wings. The 6-foot rookie guard added eight assists, three steals and two rebounds.

The Fever knocked down a season-high 16 3-pointers as a team. Indiana guard Kelsey Mitchell matched Clark’s 3-pointers count with 6-of-12 3-point shooting.

With the win, Indiana also secured and is locked into the No. 6 seed in the upcoming WNBA playoffs and assured itself of its first .500 or better record since the 2016 season.

The Fever are awaiting results elsewhere to determine who they will meet in the first round of the WNBA Playoffs.

The Connecticut Sun are currently the No. 3 seed in the WNBA standings and would be slated to meet the Indiana Fever if the season ended today. There are scenarios that would see Indiana meet either the Minnesota Lynx or the Las Vegas Aces in the first round, though.

Minnesota, the current No. 2 seed, would fall to the No. 3 seed and play the Fever if the Lynx lose out versus Connecticut and Los Angeles and if Connecticut wins out versus Minnesota and Chicago.

Las Vegas, the current No. 4 seed, would rise to the No. 3 seed and play the Fever if the Aces win out versus Seattle and Dallas while Connecticut loses out versus Minnesota and Chicago.

All other scenarios would see Connecticut remain as the No. 3 seed against the Fever.
