In a tense moment on a popular talk show, liberal TV host Emily Thompson mocked Connor McDavid, questioning whether his success in the NHL was a result of “white privilege.” The remark, made during a discussion on race and privilege in sports, caught many off guard, including McDavid himself.
Thompson, known for her progressive views, challenged the superstar hockey player by stating, “You’ve achieved so much in a predominantly white sport, and your success has made you millions. Don’t you think that your white privilege has played a role in your rise?” The comment was designed to provoke a response, perhaps to catch McDavid off guard. But what happened next was far from expected.
McDavid, known for his composure both on and off the ice, didn’t flinch. With quiet confidence, he responded, “I understand the role that privilege plays in society, but it’s not the only factor in my success. I’ve worked tirelessly for everything I’ve achieved, and my family has made many sacrifices along the way. It’s about hard work, not just the color of my skin.”
The studio fell silent as McDavid’s words landed with impact. He continued, emphasizing that privilege is complex and not the sole reason for an athlete’s success. “I recognize privilege, but I also recognize the effort that goes into reaching the top of any field,” McDavid said, holding his ground.
Thompson, caught off guard by McDavid’s calm but firm response, struggled to continue the conversation. The audience, initially uncomfortable, began nodding in agreement. McDavid had not only handled the question with dignity but had turned a potentially divisive moment into an opportunity for deeper reflection.

Connor McDavid’s wife reveals Sportsnet analyst Luke Gazdic set up the couple
In a rinkside interview with ESPN during the 4 Nations Faceoff, Lauren McDavid opened up on the beginning of her relationship with Connor, and even being set up by former teammate Luke Gazdic.
You know who Luke Gazdic is? We’re like kind of on a blind date in Toronto. That was 10 years ago now, he was 18, I was 19. It was funny because I had to use my ID to get us a bottle of wine because he was underage.- Lauren Kyle McDavid
Still only 35 years old, Gazdic is now a regular on Sportsnet as an analyst for Oilers games. He played parts of three seasons with the Oilers between 2013 and 2016, and despite only scoring 5 goals and 8 points, he was a great guy in the locker room that’s clearly left his mark in the Oilers lore.
It’s fun to hear how the Oilers captain met his now-wife in a blind date scenario set up by a teammate. It’s hilarious to imagine a young superstar McDavid asking his date to pull her ID for a drink, too.

Lauren has started a bar and restaurant in downtown Edmonton, as well as apparel collaborations with the Oilers and her own fashion line. All of these commitments to the city of Edmonton indicate they plan on being here long term, including a contract extension for McDavid.
It’s great to see the Oilers superstar thriving off the ice and putting down roots for a long career in Edmonton.
