Fans Divided Over Caitlin Clark’s Courtside Antics in Fever’s Loss to Mystics: “Reminiscent of LeBron (James)”

Just when the ticket prices dipped and the fans reconsidered their travel plans, Caitlin Clark told them to hold on. Not literally. But the Indiana Fever icon showed up courtside, signed the t-shirts, and posed for the snaps. But… that wasn’t all she was sending them home with. Expect a bit of on-court involvement when there’s hardwood and Caitlin Clark. The 2024 ROTY may not be shooting from the logo or stunning with no-look passes, but she is not letting go of a fiery side that has had everyone — from her coaches to her dad– complaining about. This time, add fans to the list.
After Caitlin Clark was sidelined for her quad injury, Stephanie White wasn’t letting her dwell. The HC, instead, asked her star guard to tag along with the coaching staff to get a view of their side. “We’ve asked her to just be around the coaches throughout the course of practice and in-game so that she can hear our perspective—where we’re coming from, the things that we’re trying to emphasize—so that she can get a little bit more of a coaching hat,” she revealed. So, Clark showed up for the game against the Mystics and did not sit still.
The former Hawkeye went up to the referees after the first half concluded, where they trailed 44-40. Clark seemed to have been arguing about a certain call along with one of the assistant coaches, who was just as animated as Clark. This is not the first time she has had her brush with the refs. Coach Lisa Bluder, Jan Jensen, and her father– everyone’s aware of the competitive side that comes out, and they are no fans of it.
You can say she borrows a little of that from her father, Brent, who admits: “I was a pretty emotional player. I even recall fights in a couple of games. I wasn’t the instigator, but the competitive juices just flowed. Caitlin and I see a lot of me in her in that way.” But he once had to yell at her to stop complaining during an Iowa game after she had a disagreement with a ref. Regardless, don’t expect her to tone down just yet.
After 6 techs last season, just this campaign, Clark argued a no-call along with Sophie Cunningham in their last game against the Liberty, and the referee just ignored both of them. She was also seen arguing in the preseason game against the Mystics, which she missed because of a left leg injury.
Officiating has been an issue for the Fever the entire season. Stephanie White was even fined for her comments after the Liberty game. Yet, she still maintained that they are not getting consistency from the referees. So that disagreement from Clark was no surprise element. But for the fans, they weren’t all on board.
Fans compare Clark’s outbursts to Lebron James
Lebron James is no doubt one of the greatest players to play the game, but he also has a reputation for being a bit of a crybaby when it comes to the referees. Steve Aschburner once tried to justify the outbursts saying, “Ihappen to think LeBron James suffers from the Shaq syndrome of being so big and strong that fouls against most players look like gnats on him.” Now as Caitlin Clark consistently makes headline, the fans couldn’t keep off the comparisons.
“Got that LeBron cry baby in her,” one of them wrote. Lebron has historically been a figure constantly trolled by the fans for his ‘whining’. But he usually restrains himself before crossing the line into technical foul territory. He has 74 in 22 years. After CC’s 6 last year, one short of getting her suspended from the game, the similarities stood out for the fans.
“No different then Lebron when he is on the sideline chirping,” a comment echoed. The Fever rookie has disagreed with the calls right from the season opener against the Chicago Sky. She didn’t believe the flagrant foul call on her was the right decision, and she made it known. After the game against Liberty, she admitted a few might have gotten away with arm pulling. Now as list of complaints grew, fans express she needs to dial it down.
“She’s complaining too much lately it needs to stop,” came another. But for what it’s worth, Clark doesn’t drag on the matter. Even after she had disagreed with the flagrant foul, she concluded saying, “that’s up to the ref’s discretion.” She’s competitive. She’s going to play her game. If there’s a whistle she disagrees with, the most she can do is let it be known. For that, a few are on board.
“It’s called knowing the game and having passion,” one fan wrote in support. And as aforementioned, officiating has been a concern throughout the league. After their game against Connecticut, Cheryl Reeve had expressed how there’s unfair physicality against Collier and players do get away with it. So it makes sense for players to stand up and there’s support for that. “As she should, get ‘em CC,” another declared.
The Fever will be back home for their next game against the Connecticut Sun so Clark will surely be courtside once again. If she continues this streak, she might actually get a technical from the bench!
