Minutes after returning to the Oval Office, his first priority was speaking to the injured agent.  Leavitt, who was seated next to the First Family when the shots rang out, described the President’s “remarkable calm in the face of chaos” as something she would “never forget.”

The Kimmel Controversy and the ‘Cult of Hatred’
The most explosive portion of the briefing, however, was Leavitt’s ruthless trashing of the “systemic demonization” she claims fueled the shooter’s motives. She pointed a direct finger at ABC late-night host Jimmy Kimmel, labeling his recent comments about First Lady Melania Trump as “completely deranged” and “disgusting.”

According to the White House, this “left-wing cult of hatred” inspires “mentally perturbed individuals” to believe that violence is a legitimate political tool.

A National Security Emergency: The DHS Shutdown
Turning to the legislative side of the crisis, Leavitt slammed the “shameful” and “reckless political gamesmanship” that has left the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) defunded for 73 days—the longest shutdown of a federal agency in U.S. history.

The Secret Service, a vital component of DHS, is currently operating under immense pressure without guaranteed funding. Leavitt warned that this “national scandal” places an “enormous and totally pointless burden” on the men and women who put their lives in harm’s way. She challenged the media’s coverage, suggesting that if a Republican-led Congress had defunded DHS prior to an attempt on a Democratic president, the “relentless and unforgiving” coverage would be a “national emergency.”

Looking Forward: Security and Resilience
Despite the trauma of the weekend—which saw guests and journalists “forced to dive under tables and fearing for their lives”—Leavitt insisted that the President remains “undeterred.” Plans are already in motion to reschedule the dinner within 30 days, though the venue remains a point of discussion.

The White House is currently reviewing security protocols, with Chief of Staff Susie Wiles convening meetings with DHS and Secret Service leadership to ensure the safety of the President during upcoming major events like the World Cup and the 2028 Olympics.  Leavitt also reiterated the need for the “White House Ballroom project,” a secure facility on the complex that would allow the “line of succession” to gather safely without the fear of the “perpetrator” who tried to breach the security perimeter on Saturday.
