New Jersey politicians and officials are condemning political violence after conservative influencer Charlie Kirk was shot and killed Sept. 10 while speaking at an event at a university in Utah, President Donald Trump confirmed.

“No one understood or had the Heart of the Youth in the United States of America better than Charlie. He was loved and admired by ALL, especially me, and now, he is no longer with us. Melania and my Sympathies go out to his beautiful wife Erika, and family. Charlie, we love you!” Trump said in a post on Truth Social.

Livestream video of the event showed crowds of people running from the university’s courtyard where Kirk, 31, was holding a speaking event when the shooting occurred.

In New Jersey, politicians and officials were quick to condemn political violence while voicing support for Kirk.

Gov. Phil Murphy said he was horrified by the shooting.

“We must unequivocally condemn political violence,” Murphy wrote on X. “Please pray for Charlie, his wife, and children.”

Sen. Cory Booker said political violence is evil and an attack on “our most fundamental values.”

“The shooting of Charlie Kirk today in Utah must be condemned by all,” Booker wrote on X. “My heart is with Charlie Kirk, his family, and all those who are impacted.”

Sen. Andy Kim called the shooting “simply abhorrent.”

“There is no justification for political violence,” Kim wrote on X. “We all must condemn this attack on Charlie Kirk.”

Attorney General Matt Platkin said political violence must be rejected.

“We must speak with one voice and reject political violence of any kind,” Platkin wrote on X. “It has no place in our democracy—period. I pray for Mr. Kirk and his family, as well as the students and members of the Utah Valley University community.”

GOP gubernatorial candidate Jack Ciattarelli wrote on X: “There must be zero tolerance for political violence and harsh punishment for the perpetrators of it. Pray for Charlie Kirk and his young family.”

“The shooting of Charlie Kirk is appalling. I’m praying for him and his family. Political violence is dangerous, un-American, and has no place in our democracy,” Rep. Mikie Sherrill wrote on Facebook.

“I was shocked and appalled to hear the news of Charlie Kirk’s shooting today. We as a country cannot afford to normalize political violence and gun violence. American democracy is based upon the principle of peaceful, respectful disagreement,” Rep. Frank Pallone wrote on X.

“This is truly horrific. We must forcefully reject all political violence. There is no place for it in our country. Bill and I are praying for Charlie and his family,” Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman wrote on X.

Rep. Tom Kean Jr. wrote on X: “Political violence is never acceptable. My thoughts and prayers are with Charlie Kirk, his family, and our country during this difficult time.”
