Marsh stepped in to fill the role vacated by Teresa Weatherspoon in late September.
Tyler Marsh should be more careful about what he says on social media. Even though he hasn’t even introduced himself to the players yet, some internet sleuths have already begun digging up the new Chicago Sky coach’s past, including a comment that could land him in hot water with team star Angel Reese.
Marsh comes to the Sky to fill the role left vacant by Teresa Weatherspoon’s unexpected firing in late September. His appointment caused some controversy due to his lack of experience as a head coach.
Worse yet, it’s well known that Reese didn’t take Weatherspoon’s unexpected departure very well. Just 24 hours after Weatherspoon’s firing, the star forward posted a lengthy farewell, saying she was “heartbroken” by the management’s decision.
For Reese, Marsh’s arrival means going back to square one, with a new coach in just her second year in the WNBA. Marsh, on the other hand, has been closely following the Sky forward’s career, as evidenced by his social media posts.
Marsh knows Chi-Barbie well
“Drastic difference in AR [Angel Reese] footwork when patient vs. when rushed. Been on point today. Keep feeding her,” Marsh wrote of the forward a few months ago.
Coaches and their assistants spend plenty of time analyzing their opponents’ strengths and weaknesses. However, Marsh’s comment is from late January, when Reese was still playing with the LSU Tigers. This makes it clear that he has been following the young player’s career for quite some time now.
But she hasn’t just followed Reese. Marsh also had his eye on the Sky’s next generation. “Future of the Sky is in good hands. Young, tough & don’t give af about anybody’s opinions other than their own. Gotta respect it,” the coach declared this past June.
Marsh arrives to develop Reese
Marsh is no amateur. The new Sky head coach has a long history in professional basketball, primarily as an assistant coach. Furthermore, he is one of the best talent developers currently working.

Before arriving in Chicago, Marsh worked two years as an assistant to Becky Harmon, and many consider it was thanks to him that Jackie Young was named the 2022 WNBA Most Improved Player. Before that, Marsh was an assistant and talent development coach for the Indiana Pacers under Nate Bjorkgren and Rick Carlisle.
With these credentials, it seems evident that Marsh arrives to work where many consider Weatherspoon failed: polishing the talent of rookies Angel Reese and Kamilla Cardoso. The question is: Can Reese put Weatherspoon’s departure behind her and embrace Marsh’s guidance? Only time will tell.
