DeAndre Hopkins’ four-word Patrick Mahomes post resurfaces after Kansas City Chiefs trade

DeAndre Hopkins once posted positively about Patrick Mahomes almost two years ago and will now relish working with the quarterback as Kansas City Chiefs close in on an historic three-peat

An incredible four-word post from DeAndre Hopkins about his new teammate Patrick Mahomes at Kansas City Chiefs has gone viral once again.

The wide receiver has played at Houston Texans, Arizona Cardinals, and Tennessee Titans but “DHop” is swapping Nashville for Missouri as the Titans and Kansas City Chiefs completed a trade Wednesday, in a move that will bulk up the options Mahomes has at his disposal.

At the Chiefs, Hopkins will work closely with the NFL’s most talented quarterback Mahomes, and internet sleuths scrolled through his social media accounts to find an old post about his new teammate.

Almost a year ago on February 13, 2023, Hopkins couldn’t help but marvel at Mahomes, who was one day away from spearheading the Chiefs’ success at the Super Bowl that year. The Chiefs edged Philadelphia Eagles by a 38-35 score, with Mahomes throwing passes for three touchdowns, totaling 182 passing yards for the big game.

Back then, Hopkins was months away from being released by the Cardinals and signing a two-year deal at the Titans. And he simply said at the time: “Patrick Mahomes is different.”

There’s an old saying in sports that your idols become your rivals but, for Hopkins at least, it appears his idol will become his peer, colleague, and partner. He’ll quickly find out just how different Mahomes is in practice, and in upcoming games against Las Vegas Raiders on October 27, Tampa Bay Buccaneers on November 4, and Denver Broncos on November 10.

That Super Bowl was the first of two in succession for the Chiefs, and Mahomes will hope for a three-peat. If Hopkins links seamlessly with him on offense, then the new recruit could play a key role in helping the team make it three in a row.

To do that, he’ll have to find form. This is because Hopkins suffered inconsistency this year with 15 catches, 173 receiving yards, and one touchdown. These statistics do not tell the full story of his career, though, as the 2013 Clemson graduate enjoyed a decade of success at WR with 943 catches, 12,528 receiving yards, and 76 touchdowns from 168 games in the NFL.

The Chiefs are currently bereft of quality options at WR due to injuries to key players in that position like JuJu Smith-Schuster (hamstring), Rashee Rice (knee), and Marquis “Hollywood” Brown (shoulder). Even Hopkins has been playing through an MCL injury having torn it during practice in the summer.

ESPN reporter Adam Schefter posted details about the trade on X, formerly Twitter. He said the Titans “get a 2025 fifth-round pick that becomes a fourth-round pick if the Chiefs make the Super Bowl.” Titans will pay “a little less than half” of Hopkins’ $8 million salary for the remainder of the season.
