‘Wanted to fight me’ – Irate Patrick Mahomes defied Andy Reid’s orders after Chiefs injury scare
Patrick Mahomes won’t give up without a fight — even if the man in the opposite corner is Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid.
The superstar quarterback suffered an ankle injury during a tense Monday Night Football clash against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in November, which threatened to derail an undefeated season.

Reid told the reigning Super Bowl MVP that he was taking his injured franchise QB out of the game.
Mahomes’ ft 2in and 225lb ‘dad bod’ frame had to be supported by two staff members as he left the field with a rolled ankle.
“(My ankle) rolled the other way when I went to plant,” he later revealed.
That was the last thing that Reid wanted to hear, and he let the three-time champion know it.
“Patrick, I’m going to take you out,” Reid said.
Travis Kelce infamously got in Reid’s face and shoved the respected coach during the previous Super Bowl.
Mahomes, who has more of a reputation for breaking up fights than starting them, didn’t go that far but did directly defy his coach’s order.
“Well, when he was being carried off, I wasn’t too easy with it,” said Reid. “I wasn’t sure exactly where he was going to be with it.
“He might have the loosest ankles in America. It’s ridiculous how he can come back from those things. Then he’s mentally tough on top of it. He’s a competitor. He’s a tough kid.

Mahomes was checked out in a sideline tent.
But Reid trusted his three-time Super Bowl champ, and listened when he objected.
Carson Wentz returned to the sideline and Mahomes engineered another game-winning drive in a 30-24 overtime triumph.
The Chiefs improved to 8-0 to keep their win streak alive, only to lose it 12 days later on the road to the Buffalo Bills.
“You feel the pain and that scares you,” Mahomes said.
“Because I’ve dealt with ankles before. But I just kind of laid there and as time went on the pain subsided.
“I just kind of got to it, and got moving again and felt comfortable going out there.”
Mahomes came into 2024 looking to secure an unprecedented three-peat.
But while an undefeated start suggested that nobody could stop Reid’s juggernaut, cracks had begun to appear.
A leaky offensive line was ruthlessly exposed by the Philadelphia Eagles in the Super Bowl.
Reid then lost All-Pro guard Joe Thuney to the Chicago Bears over the offseason in another blow.
First-round pick Josh Simmons could finally prove to be the answer at left tackle.

If the rookie doesn’t deliver, Reid may have to find other ways of protecting his star asset. Taking him off the field won’t be one of them.
