Oliver Wahlstrom stunned by comments made about him by Bruins captain Brad Marchand.
The Boston Bruins claimed Oliver Wahlstrom off waivers this week. The former first-round pick will get a fresh start with his hometown team.
In a feel-good story, Wahlstrom has returned home to Massachusetts to play for the Boston Bruins. The former first-round pick will get to don the Black and Gold and get a fresh start.
The move wasn’t expected, but with the team needing a spark on offense, claiming someone like Wahlstrom wasn’t a bad idea. He has an affordable cap hit of $1 million dollars, and for a cash-strapped team like the Bruins, it made sense.
Since he arrived in Boston, captain Brad Marchand was asked about the move to bring Wahlstrom into the fold.
This season, he’s been a disappointment for Marchand with the Islanders, as he’s scored only four points (2G, 2A) in 27 games.
But that didn’t stop Brad Marchand from giving Wahlstrom a huge compliment.
“He’s a great shooter,” Marchand told reporters in Vancouver, per team-provided video. “He’s a very, very dangerous shot. He’s almost like a big Pasta (David Pastrnak) the way he can shoot a puck.
He’ll be a weapon in that aspect, and then he seems to be strong on it and competes, so looking forward to having him (join the team).
“Wahlstrom was taken aback by the comparison and obviously has a huge amount of respect for David Pastrnak. He humbly responded.
“I didn’t hear about that,” Wahlstrom told reporters, per team-provided video. “That’s outrageous. Pasta is Pasta. Obviously, the shot’s there, but I’ve been working on a lot of other things in my game.”
It’s already made an impact on Wahlstrom, and Marchand is working quick obviously to make him feel welcome in the B’s locker room.
“That was pretty cool. Obviously, I grew up watching him play,” Wahlstrom said. ” I don’t know if it’s sunk in yet. It’s a dream come true to be back home where my family and friends live.”
This is just part of the fairy tale for Wahlstrom, who gets to play with his favorite NHL star, Brad Marchand.
Meanwhile, Joe Sacco gave us an idea of when we can see him in the lineup, as he’s been practicing with different Bruins lines.
“He rotated in with two lines today,” Sacco said, per team-provided audio. “We have not made any decisions yet as far as who’s playing or who’s not (Tuesday against the Flames).
It was an opportunity for us to see him in a full skate with the team, which was good.”There’s hope Wahlstrom can establish new career highs in the Bruins lineup, as he scored 24 points (11G, 13A) in 2021-22 but has been unable to play to his draft position (11th overall in 2018).
