Can Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes Become MVP Frontrunner vs. Saints?

Can Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes separate himself in the Most Valuable Player race with a strong performance against the New Orleans Saints?

.

Heading into the game, the Chiefs are the only undefeated team left in the AFC.

If they are able to win on Monday, it would be the first time since 2018 that Kansas City began a season 5-0.

That year was Patrick Mahomes‘ first as the team’s starter, where he went on to win MVP.

In 2024, Mahomes is having a very different start through the first quarter of the season.

He has thrown a career-low in touchdowns (6) and a career-high in interceptions (5) through the first four games.

Despite this, Mahomes has a real chance to establish himself as an early frontrunner in the MVP race on Monday night.

Not only would a 5-0 start give a huge advantage to Mahomes as one of just two quarterbacks to still be undefeated, but a strong performance could separate him statistically as well, especially now that he’ll be without top weapon Rashee Rice.

Two early frontrunners for the award, Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen and Minnesota Vikings quarterback Sam Darnold, both struggled on Sunday as well.

Allen had just nine completions for 131 passing yards, while Darnold failed to score a touchdown and threw an interception.

Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson and Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow both turned in very strong performances, but when they faced Mahomes and the Chiefs head-to-head earlier in the season, Kansas City had the advantage, which could help his case
