USA Today Sounds Alarm on WNBA Within Hours After Caitlin Clark’s Groin Injury

In the two weeks that Caitlin Clark was away from the WNBA, the league plunged into darkness… Okay, it wasn’t that bad, but still. The six-foot-tall guard for the Indiana Fever has been lighting up the W for the last two seasons, pulling up for thirty-footers, and dishing amazing dimes. Fans love her, and the legends know that she’s got next. But when she got injured in May? Things started falling apart for the Fever, and the league as a whole!
The New York Liberty was responsible for this sudden shift in the status quo. Clark strained her left quad against Sabrina Ionescu and company, turning a minor niggle into an injury that sidelined her for two whole weeks. Although she got back to doing on-court workouts after a week, ten days at max, she still couldn’t take the chance on her leg. And during that time, the league suffered.
With CC on the floor, the WNBA and the Indiana Fever had flourished. Nearly two million fans regularly tuned in before her injury. And afterwards? Well, that number cut down by over 900,000. Nationally televised WNBA games saw a 55% drop in viewership, and ticket prices plummeted by over 71% against the Chicago Sky!
So, it became evident how important Clark was to the functioning of the league. Earlier today, however, USA Today Sports came bearing the worst news: “Fever star Caitlin Clark to miss game with a new injury”. They prioritized this news and kept it at the top of the app, earning praise and recognition from reporters and analysts alike.
Christine Brennan, a columnist for USA Today Sports, commended the effort. “USA Today Sports playing this news where it should be played, at the top of the app. The last time Caitlin Clark was out, more than half of the WNBA’s TV audience disappeared. Some people might not like that fact, but it’s the truth.” The fact of the matter is that Caitlin Clark’s absence will lead to a lot of repercussions for the WNBA.
Ratings, viewership numbers, revenue, you can expect everything to take a dip if this groin injury continues for a while. Because, like it or not, CC is one of the biggest names in basketball right now. A lot of people are watching just for her, and every moment she’s off the court hurts the WNBA more and more! But what is the scoop on her injury? Let’s find out what Indiana HC Stephanie White had to say about it.
Caitlin Clark’s “day-by-day” situation creates another setback for the Indiana Fever
Losing Caitlin Clark to injury right after all of the DeWanna Bonner drama is probably Indy’s worst-case scenario. We’ve talked about the team’s depth and production taking a big hit after the departure of DB, but losing Caitlin Clark? That’s a different problem entirely. CC is the heart and soul of the Fever offense, and more importantly, she just came back from injury a few days ago!
Luckily, Stephanie White and Amber Cox pulled a $53,000 stroke of brilliance by signing Aari McDonald yesterday. The five-foot-six point guard was absolutely amazing on her hardship contract during CC’s last injury, putting up 11pts and 3 ast a game, while providing some much-needed defensive vigor. McDonald’s addition has softened the blow, which would otherwise be too large to fathom.

And in terms of Caitlin Clark’s status? The Indiana Fever starter went through an MRI recently after feeling discomfort on Wednesday night. According to head coach Stephanie White, the injury is going to be evaluated on a day-to-day basis. “C has shown she’s tough and a quick healer,” White said. “We’ll see how she feels day by day.”
It will be interesting to see how CC’s second absence impacts the Indiana Fever. Team chemistry matters in tough times like these, and Clark is nothing if not a leader. If Indy wants to make a championship run this season, Caitlin Clark better get on the hardwood floor as soon as possible!
