Iowa Hawkeyes’ rising star Lucy Olsen has received a glowing endorsement from former star Caitlin Clark, who carved her name in the annals of college basketball history as the all-time leading scorer.
After graduating to professional play with Indiana Fever, Clark left big shoes to fill, but Olsen’s explosive start for the Hawkeyes suggests she might live up to the hype.
In her debut game – a commanding 91-73 triumph over Northern Illinois Huskies – Olsen demonstrated she has the chops to be a major force, racking up 17 points, four rebounds, and seven assists.
Speaking candidly on Haley Jones’ podcast ‘Sometimes I Hoop’, the young phenom opened up about the bond with her predecessor: “I’ve talked to Caitlin [Clark] a little bit.
“She’s very nice. She’s like ‘let me know if you need anything. I’m always here. I went through a lot and I got you.”
This heartwarming support highlights Clark’s role as both an icon on the court and a nurturing presence off it. Having had a spectacular junior season, Olson, who succeeded in landing third place after Clark and USC’s JuJu Watkins, is all set to light up her senior year at Iowa.

Not only does Olsen have a knack for scoring, but her accolades include being crowned 2024 Big East Most Improved Player, multiple All-Big East Team honours, and receiving the 2021 Miss Pennsylvania Basketball award.
Despite a college championship still evading her, much like it does Clark, Hawkeyes fans are eagerly anticipating whether this could be Olsen’s breakthrough year.
