Chicago Sky rookie Angel Reese is currently battling for the WNBA’s Rookie of the Year award with Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark. The two have broken countless records en route to being neck-and-neck for the prestigious award, given to the league’s best newcomer.

South Carolina women’s basketball head coach Dawn Staley, an icon in women’s sports, weighed in on the debate and revealed her pick for the award.

It’s a highly debatable topic, given the historic seasons of the two rookies. However, Staley is giving the nod to Reese, who’s currently averaging 13.8 points and 11.8 rebounds per game.

“They both are having great years, don’t get me wrong. If I had to pick a Rookie of the Year at this time. It’s Angel [Reese]. Not a doubt,” Staley said.

Reese has been on a tear as of late, notching 15 straight double-doubles, marking the most consecutive double-doubles in WNBA history.

Staley is a decorated figure in women’s sports. She has coached the Gamecocks since 2008, helping lead South Carolina to three National Championships and eight SEC tournament championships.

She also left her mark on the WNBA with the Charlotte Sting and Houston Comets. Staley concluded her career in the league as a six-time WNBA All-Star.

However, despite her status as one of the most iconic people in women’s basketball, Caitlin Clark fans were quick to take issue with Staley’s comments, making it clear they disagree.

One fan made their thoughts very clear:

“Cmon man are yall even watching the games? if you’re watching you would see Angel is doing her thing yes but she is a ROLE player Chennedy is their best player … CC RUNS the floor from start to finish and she’s the best player on the floor for her team every night be fr”

While she believes Reese is the leader in the ROTY conversation, Clark has also produced incredible numbers, with an average of 16.8 points and 7.8 assists per game.

The debate may go down to the wire in the 2024 season, but as of now, Staley has the former LSU Tiger winning the award.
