Angel Reese Refuses to Compete Against Brittney Griner: A Controversial Decision in Women’s Basketball
In a surprising turn of events, Angel Reese, the standout forward from LSU and a rising star in women’s basketball, has announced her refusal to participate in an upcoming WNBA game against the Atlanta Dream. Reese’s decision, which has sparked heated discussions among fans, analysts, and fellow athletes, stems from her concerns about the competitive integrity of the league, particularly regarding her opponent, Brittney Griner.
A Reflection on Competition
Angel Reese, known for her exceptional skills on the court, has always been a fierce competitor. However, in her recent statement, she expressed a profound disappointment with the current state of women’s basketball. “I never thought I would make such a decision, but after deep reflection, I realized that the competitive spirit of this game has been compromised,” Reese stated. Her concerns primarily revolve around Griner’s playing style, which she describes as aggressive and often crossing the line into what she considers unsportsmanlike conduct.
Reese elaborated on her discomfort with Griner’s tactics, stating, “She constantly relies on pushing, pulling, and even dirty fouls to gain an advantage while the referees turn a blind eye. As a professional athlete, I find this behavior repulsive.” This sentiment resonates with many players who value sportsmanship and fair play as cornerstones of their athletic careers.
The Impact of Griner’s Presence
Brittney Griner, a two-time Olympic gold medalist and former WNBA champion, has been a polarizing figure in women’s basketball, not only for her remarkable talent but also for the controversies surrounding her. Reese’s remarks highlight a growing divide in the league regarding how players perceive Griner’s style of play and her impact on the game.
While some fans admire Griner for her physicality and dominant presence on the court, others, like Reese, argue that such tactics detract from the essence of basketball. “The WNBA should be a platform to showcase true basketball skills, not a battlefield tainted by unfair tactics,” Reese asserted. This perspective raises important questions about the direction of the league and the standards by which players are judged.
Gender Identity and Controversy
Adding another layer to the controversy, Reese touched on the ongoing discussions about gender identity in sports, particularly regarding Griner. “While Brittney has publicly identified as female, there have been persistent rumors that she may have been born with a Y chromosome or even as male,” Reese stated. This comment has ignited a firestorm of debate, with many questioning the implications of such statements on the inclusivity and fairness of women’s sports.
The issue of transgender athletes in women’s sports has become a contentious topic in recent years, with differing opinions on how to ensure fair competition while also respecting individuals’ rights to compete in accordance with their gender identity. Reese’s comments reflect a concern among some players that the current policies may not adequately address these complexities.
A Call for Accountability
Reese’s decision to withdraw from the game against the Dream may be seen as a bold stand for accountability within the league. “I believe we need to hold each other accountable for the way we play and represent the sport,” she explained. This call for accountability resonates with many fans who feel that the integrity of women’s basketball is at stake.
The WNBA has long been a beacon of progress in women’s sports, advocating for equality and inclusion. However, as the league continues to evolve, it faces the challenge of balancing competitive fairness with inclusivity. Reese’s stance may serve as a catalyst for further discussions on how to navigate these issues moving forward.
Reactions from the Basketball Community
The basketball community has been divided in its response to Reese’s announcement. Some players and analysts have praised her courage to speak out against perceived injustices, while others have criticized her comments as disrespectful and damaging to the unity of the league. “We should be supporting each other as women athletes, not tearing each other down,” commented one WNBA player who wished to remain anonymous.
Fans have also expressed mixed feelings, with some supporting Reese’s decision and others condemning it as a betrayal of the spirit of competition. Social media has become a battleground for these discussions, with hashtags like #AngelReese and #BrittneyGriner trending as supporters and detractors voice their opinions.
The Future of Women’s Basketball
As Angel Reese prepares for what could be a pivotal moment in her career, the future of women’s basketball hangs in the balance. Will her decision inspire other players to take a stand against what they perceive as unfair practices, or will it lead to further division within the league? The WNBA is at a crossroads, and how it addresses these issues will shape the landscape of women’s sports for years to come.
In conclusion, Angel Reese’s refusal to compete against Brittney Griner highlights significant concerns about competitive integrity, sportsmanship, and the complexities of gender identity in sports. As the conversation continues, it remains to be seen how the WNBA will respond and what implications this will have for the future of women’s basketball. The league has always been a platform for empowerment and progress, and it must now navigate these challenges with care and consideration for all its players.

Angel Reese becomes second-youngest WNBA player to record triple-double
Angel Reese recorded her first triple double, Hailey Van Lith led a dominant performance by the Chicago bench with a career-high 16 points and the Sky pulled away from the Connecticut Sun for a 78-66 win on Sunday.
Reese, at the age of 23, became the second-youngest WNBA player in history with a triple double. Only Caitlin Clark had a triple double at a younger age; she had two while she was 22.
Fueled by Reese’s 11 assists – more than double her previous career high – Chicago put five players in double figures. The Sky bench outscored the Sun reserves 36-2 in the Commissioner’s Cup game.
Reese also had 11 points and 13 rebounds for Chicago (3-7). Kia Nurse had 11 points on 4-of-4 shooting with three threes, and Kamilla Cardoso and Ariel Atkins both had 10 points. Reserve Rachel Banham made her 300th career three-pointer.
Marina Mabrey scored 22 points with five threes for the Sun (2-8). Tina Charles added 19 points and Jacy Sheldon had 12.
Both teams shot 40% and made six three-pointers in the first half but the Sky were perfect on eight free throws to take a 38-36 lead. Mabrey was the only player in double figures with 16.
Mabrey’s three and two free throws by Charles gave Connecticut a 47-44 lead early in the second half but Michaela Onyenwere and Reese converted three-point plays to make it 51-48. The Sky led 59-54 entering the fourth quarter.

Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark and Chicago Sky forward Angel Reese dominated headlines during the 2024 WNBA season. The two had clashed in consecutive years in the NCAA Tournament, creating an extensive history before facing off at the professional level.
In 2023, Reese’s LSU Tigers defeated Clark’s Iowa Hawkeyes in the national championship game. Reese infamously mocked Clark with the “you can’t see me” gesture, which ignited weeks of media coverage.
One year later, Clark and the Hawkeyes prevailed in the Albany 2 Regional final, defeating Reese and the Tigers, 94-87. While Clark and Reese play different positions and possess very different styles of play, the two have been compared since college.

Both Clark and Reese delivered standout performances over the weekend. Returning from a five-game injury absence on Saturday, Clark produced 32 points, eight rebounds and nine assists to defeat the previously undefeated New York Liberty.
This performance had the basketball world buzzing, including Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James, who sent her a message on X.
One day later, Reese recorded her first WNBA triple-double in a win over the Connecticut Sun. Tallying 11 points, 13 rebounds and 11 assists, Reese joined Clark as the only two WNBA players to record a triple-double this season.
What caught the attention of fans, was James choosing to shout out Clark, but remaining silent after Reese’s performance. One fan called him out in a post that has tallied over 100,000 views on X.
Several fans in the comments shared their disappointment with James not spotlighting both players.
“He should stay on that side,” said one.
“CLOCK IT!!!!” one exclaimed.
“LeBum for a reason. MJ the GOAT,” said another.
“He’s never spoken on ar,” one pointed out. “He never will. I’m glad he hasn’t. She doesn’t need it.”
Several other posts also called out James for not acknowledging Reese.
“Oh they can never make like that man,” said one.
“He only does that for the media darling,” one added. “I’ll be so glad when he retires from my Lakers. He’s passive aggressive, petty and just needs to go home so we can build around Luka and move forward. Congratulations Angel and SkyTown ”
While James’ decision to post about Clark but not Reese has been a topic of discussion, not every fan interpreted it as disrespectful. Many pointed out that despite Reese’s impressive triple-double, she went 2-for-7 from the field, and did so against a poor Sun team.
Assuming health for both players, WNBA fans will see Clark and Reese face off again on July 27 in Chicago.
