LSU’s Kim Mulkey and her South Carolina counterpart Dawn Staley are two of the most accomplished coaches in women’s college basketball. They share seven national championships between them, with Mulkey winning four and Staley three.
On Sunday, the Lady Tigers beat North Carolina Central 131-44 to give Mulkey’s team a 9-0 record to start the season. The win was also the 100th of her LSU coaching career, making Mulkey the fastest NCAA Division I coach to reach that milestone, doing so in just 114 games.

So, how does her 100-win accomplishment compare to Staley’s at South Carolina? Let’s find out:
Kim Mulkey vs Dawn Staley: How fast did the Gamecocks coach reach 100 wins?
Dawn Staley first became the coach of the South Carolina Gamecocks in 2008. It took her 166 games to reach 100 career wins at the school. Interestingly, she reached that mark on Dec. 2, 2013, with the Gamecocks beating North Carolina Central 79-27.
So, it took Staley 52 more games than Kim Mulkey to reach the 100-win milestone.
Mulkey has been the coach at LSU for only four seasons, taking over the program that went 9-13 in the 2020-21 season.
“Throughout my career I’ve been blessed to coach players who believe in our system and believe in what we do,” Mulkey reflected on her 100-win milestone.
“Coming to LSU is not any different than when I was at Baylor for 20-plus years. The kids have to believe in you. They have to let you coach them, and all of those wins belong to them.”
In contrast, Dawn Staley achieved her 100th win early in her sixth season at South Carolina. She’s only the fourth coach to win at least 100 games in program history.
The same season (2013-14) she led the Gamecocks to their first SEC regular season title — an accomplishment that foreshadowed the program’s rise to national prominence.
Since winning that championship in 2014, Staley led South Carolina to seven more regular-season SEC and eight SEC tournament titles. She has also guided the Gamecocks to six Final Four appearances and three national championships – in 2017, 2022 and 2024.
Dawn Staley’s South Carolina went on a 43-game winning streak after losing to Iowa in the 2023 NCAA Final Four. They finished last season with a perfect 38-0 record but fell to the UCLA Bruins in the sixth game of this campaign.
Through 17 seasons as the South Carolina coach, Staley has compiled an impressive 448-107 record.
