Patrick Mahomes Sr., a former MLB pitcher and father to the NFL star, was arrested on February 3, 2024 , in Tyler, Texas, after being pulled over and recording a blood alcohol content of 0.23 —nearly three times the legal limit. The arresting officer reported finding an open can of beer in the center console, and Mahomes Sr. failed field sobriety tests before being taken into custody. This marked his third DWI charge.

The incident occurred just eight days before Mahomes led the Chiefs to victory in the Super Bowl , thrusting the family into the media spotlight at a critical time.

Patrick Mahomes Reflects

In a new episode of ESPN’s original series *Chiefs Kingdom* airing August 20, Patrick Mahomes, 29, opens up about how the arrest affected him personally and professionally.

“It was during that Super Bowl. It became a story, and so, I had to answer questions about it,” Mahomes recalled. “I think just knowing that it hurt me woke him up to know that like, you can’t keep doing the same things.”

Mahomes described the emotional turmoil of being asked about his father’s arrest during one of the most important weeks of his career.

Mahomes Sr. Shares His Regret

Patrick Mahomes Sr., 55, expressed deep embarrassment over the incident and the impact it had on his son.

“For him to have to answer questions about me was probably the most embarrassing thing I’ve ever been through in my life,” he said.

He recounted calling his son immediately after the arrest, apologizing for distracting him and taking away from his focus during the Chiefs’ championship run.

“I called him right after and I told him, I said, ‘I’m sorry that it’s taking away from your time and taking away from your focus.’ ”

Family Impact

Brittany Mahomes, Patrick’s wife and mother of their three children, also shared her perspective on the episode, noting the effect the arrest had on the family.

“I think it finally hit him that his kids and grandkids are watching,” Brittany, 29, said.

A History of Struggles

During a confessional interview, Mahomes Sr. admitted that being “considered one of the best athletes in the world” had afforded him certain privileges, some of which he now regrets taking. He acknowledged that he never truly considered alcohol to be a problem, attributing his behavior to the culture of professional sports.

“It was just something that I’ve always done, just something that’s in the game. I went out, partied a little bit, wasn’t always where I was supposed to be,” he said.

Patrick Mahomes also noted that his father’s ability to perform on the baseball field may have caused him to underestimate the severity of his alcohol consumption before retiring in 2009.

Legal Consequences

Moving Forward

The Mahomes family’s willingness to address the difficult situation publicly highlights the challenges even high-profile families can face and the importance of accountability and growth. As Mahomes Sr. continues to reckon with the consequences of his actions, Patrick Mahomes remains focused on his career and family, hoping the experience serves as a wake-up call for lasting change.
