The family of Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is reaching out for prayers and support as a young relative faces a devastating cancer diagnosis. Mahomes’ mother, Randi, has made an emotional plea to help Luka, her cousin’s grandson, who is fighting a rare form of childhood cancer.

Sudden Illness Strikes

Luka was a “perfectly healthy” baby until the day he turned eight months old. While on vacation, he accidentally inhaled swimming pool water and was soon rushed to the hospital. What initially seemed like a frightening accident quickly turned into something much more serious.

Last month, Luka was diagnosed with stage L2 intermediate neuroblastoma, a rare cancer that affects about 800 children in the United States each year. Doctors discovered a large tumor pressing against his lung, prompting immediate surgery. Luka spent five days in the intensive care unit (ICU) and has since started chemotherapy.

Family’s Plea for Help

This week, Randi Mahomes took to Instagram to ask for prayers and support for Luka and his family. “Please join me in continuing to pray for my cousin’s grandson. Sweet Luka is still fighting Stage L2 intermediate neuroblastoma,” she wrote. “He is undergoing chemo and fighting hard. Please pray for this sweet family as they are going through one of the hardest trials of their lives.”

Randi also shared a link to a GoFundMe page set up to support Luka’s parents, Cassie and Carlos, as they navigate this challenging journey. At the time of writing, the fundraiser was nearing its $9,000 goal. Randi herself has contributed $500 to the fund.

Compounding Family Tragedy

Luka’s battle comes at a particularly difficult time for the Mahomes family. Just months ago, Randi lost her father, Randy Mahomes—Patrick’s grandfather—who passed away in February following an undisclosed illness. His death occurred just five days after Patrick and the Chiefs suffered a heartbreaking Super Bowl loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.

Luka’s Ongoing Fight

According to updates on the GoFundMe page, Luka has moved out of intensive care and is now being treated on the oncology floor. However, his recovery remains precarious. “His chest tube still remains in place and is still draining,” the family shared. “His next round of chemotherapy will take place on June 25th, and the oncologists are hoping that after the second round, the fluid draining from his lung will subside.”

Luka’s parents, Cassie and Carlos, have been by his side since he was admitted. Cassie, an ICU nurse, is unable to work during Luka’s treatment out of concern for exposing her immunocompromised son to illness.
