Dawn Staley, renowned basketball coach and Olympic gold medalist, is celebrated for her excellence on the court and her heart off it. Recently, a simple meal at a small diner turned into an unforgettable moment when a waitress, struggling to make ends meet, was on the receiving end of Staley’s extraordinary kindness.
The waitress, a single mother named Lisa, had no idea who Dawn Staley was when she served her. Despite her friendly demeanor, Lisa’s stress was apparent—her bills were piling up, and she was working extra shifts to support her two children. Staley, sitting quietly in the corner booth, noticed Lisa’s warm but weary smile as she tirelessly served customers.
At the end of her meal, Staley left a generous tip, but it was the note on the check that brought Lisa to tears. It read: “Thank you for your kindness and hard work. I see your strength, and I want to pay it forward. Use this to ease your burden and remember—you are amazing. Keep going. – Dawn Staley.”

Beneath the note, Staley had left a $1,000 tip. Lisa, overwhelmed, broke down in tears, clutching the note as she realized the magnitude of the gesture. When a fellow diner explained who Dawn Staley was, Lisa was even more stunned. “I had no idea,” she said. “She didn’t act like a celebrity—just a kind, humble person who cared.”
The story quickly spread through social media after the diner owner shared Lisa’s reaction, and fans praised Staley for her act of generosity. For Lisa, it wasn’t just the money but the encouragement that mattered most. “That note reminded me that people see my struggles and care,” she said.
Once again, Dawn Staley showed that true greatness lies not just in accomplishments but in lifting others along the way.
Dawn Staley bought her team’s NCAA opponent a $5,000 Ruth’s Chris meal before they played
During the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Women’s Basketball Media Day, Norfolk State women’s basketball head coach Larry Vickers shared a nice story about Dawn Staley and the South Carolina women’s basketball team.
According to Vickers, the South Carolina team bought dinner for Norfolk State’s team the night before both teams played against each other in the first round of the 2023 NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament.
The dinner took place at Ruth’s Chris Steak House and was fully paid for by the South Carolina program, and the Norfolk State’s team enjoyed the nice gesture and ordered more than enough food, Vickers said.
“We might’ve spent about five grand on dinner,” he said. “My team ran up the tab.”

Vickers said many of his players had never been to a luxury steakhouse before and each player ordered an entrée with two sides, not knowing that the sides were made to be shareable thus getting enough food for a feast. Unfortunately, all that food did not help their performance the following day.
“Somehow, we played the next day five pounds heavier,” Vickers joked.
Vickers praised Staley for her hospitality and said that he was impressed with the magnitude and energy around her after he personally met her. He added that Staley does an excellent job of making everyone feel loved and comfortable.
