Nurse Anna had been working in the morgue for almost three years. During that time she had gotten used to everything: the icy smell, the silence, the indifference of death. But the more time passed, the clearer she understood: getting rich at this job was impossible. Her salary was barely enough for rent and food, and Anna dreamed of something else — her own home, trips to countries she had only seen in photographs.
But those dreams couldn’t come true if she continued working honestly. And so Anna took a step no one was ever supposed to know about. She started stealing.
Not from colleagues, not from the hospital — but from those who would never wake up again. People often arrived at the morgue with expensive jewelry, rings, chains, watches.
Sometimes even with wallets or car keys.
Relatives rarely noticed anything missing: they were too overwhelmed by the death itself. And even if they remembered the details, no one in the morgue would give a precise answer anyway.

For Anna it became “easy money.”
And one day a man of about thirty-five was brought to the morgue. Cause of death — cardiac arrest. Young, not old at all, and clearly from a wealthy family: his clothes were expensive and neat. But what interested Anna most was the gold ring on his ring finger. Thick, heavy, with a muted shine — definitely not a cheap trinket.
— It must be expensive… — flashed through her mind.
She decided to wait for the right moment. In the evening, when the on-duty doctor left and the orderly moved the gurney into the next room, Anna was left alone with the man. She knew that in this part of the morgue the cameras hadn’t worked for a long time — the wiring was broken and nobody bothered repairing it.
Coming closer, she leaned over the man. His face looked calm, as if he were simply sleeping. But Anna had seen hundreds of such “sleepers” — to her he wasn’t a person, but an object.
She reached out her hand and carefully tried to remove the ring.
But the moment she touched the ring, her heart nearly stopped.
Continuation in the first comment.
The man’s hand was warm.
She jerked her fingers back and turned pale. She stood for several seconds, unable to believe what was happening.
Thoughts rushed through her mind:
“This can’t be… Dead people aren’t warm. I must be mistaken. It’s just my nerves…”
But her inner voice didn’t calm down.
With trembling hands she touched his wrist again — this time placing her fingers on his pulse point.
A pulse.
Weak, barely noticeable — but a pulse.
Anna quickly stepped back, grabbing her mouth so she wouldn’t scream.
Her head spun: the man was alive.
If she hadn’t tried to take the ring, they would have assumed he was dead, and tomorrow his body would have been cut open on the pathologist’s table.
Seconds felt like eternity.
Anna realized: her habit of stealing had just saved a man’s life.
She rushed for help, calling for the doctor.
Later it would turn out that the man had suffered a rare condition — a deep lethargic sleep.
His heart slowed almost to a stop, his breathing became nearly undetectable, and even an experienced doctor decided he was dead.
But thanks to Anna — thanks to her criminal yet fateful action — the man survived.
And only she knew that the reason for this miraculous rescue was not her diligence… but her greed.
