Amidst the hype of Simone Biles winning four gold medals and one silver from her performances in the 2024 Paris Olympics, one figure from her past has resurfaced with hopes of reconnecting.

Shanon Biles, biological mother to the gymnast, said in an interview with DailyMail that she hopes to begin a new relationship with her daughter after choosing a life of sobriety. Though she wasn’t invited to see her personally, Biles told the outlet she celebrated the GOAT’s win with a party in the yard of her Columbus, Oh. home.

Biles hasn’t seen her daughter since she was six years old, she told DailyMail. She said she lost Simone and her three other children to foster care after struggling with drug abuse and alcoholism. Following that, Simone’s grandparents stepped up to adopt her and her younger sister, while Simone’s two eldest siblings were taken in by their great aunt, the report says. Simone was raised in Houston, Tx., while her mother remained in Ohio, thousands of miles away.

Shanon Biles struggled financially throughout the years, telling DailyMail she didn’t have anything but a $34 prepaid card by 2018. Her assets included a totaled Toyota Scion and an unusable GMC truck, various household items, electronics and clothing. She even considered listing her pets for sale, the report says. Biles said while claiming all of these items, she still came $34 short of the worth of her home: $9,684. In a bankruptcy petition, she agreed to reaffirm a little over $600 of her debt.

Additionally, she said that she had outstanding bills for student loans, medical services and shopping expenses. Aside from money troubles, she was in and out of the courts for several traffic violations and an assault charge. In between her tribulations, she rarely heard directly from Simone. Birthdays, graduations and even her recent wedding to NFL player Jonathan Owens were celebrated in hr mother’s absence.

“What I hear about Simone I hear through my dad. If I need to know anything I call my dad. I ask him about Simone, and he keeps me posted,” Biles told DailyMail.

Now that she’s turned over a new leaf on the road to recovering from her substance addictions, Biles said she’s obtained a store clerk position at a local Save A Lot and remains in her same Ohio home, per the report. The one thing missing is a connection with her daughter. In fear of her reaction, Biles said she never picked up the phone to call. Instead, she said she believes it should be Simone’s decision whether they reconnect or not.

“’I want to let her know I love her and I’m very proud of her,” Biles said. “But I’m still waiting. Whenever she’s ready I’m here and willing to receive.”
