League officials reportedly see the growth leading to even more opportunities for player exposure and fan engagement in women’s basketball.
WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert said, “Demand for the WNBA has never been greater, and expanding to a 50-game regular season reflects the extraordinary momentum we are seeing across the league.
“This move reflects our commitment to growing the game and creating more opportunities for fans to watch the best players in the world and experience the extraordinary talent and competition that define the WNBA.”
According to the new Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), the expansion to 50 games has been given a thumbs-up.

But that figure can still jump to 52 games from 2029 to 2032.
The agreement also says that the upcoming season can start anytime after April 1, but cannot go any later than November 21.
In the league’s first season, all the way back in 1997, there were only 28 games in the whole season.
That went up to 34 fixtures in 2003 and stayed that way until 2020 when it dropped 12 games due to COVID-19.
Three expansion teams have been added by the WNBA over the last two campaigns.
But they are reportedly planning to include a whopping 18 teams in the league by the 2030 season – adding three more expansion teams in Cleveland, Philadelphia, and Detroit.
More details about the season schedule, including footprint and dates, will be revealed at some point in the future.
