It was a night meant to be celebratory. A marquee win. A sold-out arena. And a dazzling debut from one of the NHL’s most polarizing and accomplished stars, Brad Marchand. But while the Florida Panthers basked in the afterglow of a 5–1 rout over the Toronto Maple Leafs, one face stood out for its lack of joy—Matthew Tkachuk.
Brad Marchand’s move to the Florida Panthers in the final hours of the trade deadline stunned the league. After 15 years with the Boston Bruins, the 36-year-old agitator known for his snarl, scoring touch, and playoff pedigree became a Panther. And he wasted no time making an impact.

While his teammates mobbed Marchand postgame and media buzzed about the new “dynamic duo” potential, Matthew Tkachuk watched from the bench. Cameras captured him leaning forward, elbows on knees, jaw clenched tight. No smiles. No celebratory fist pumps.
“He didn’t say a word the whole third period,” a source close to the team shared anonymously. “That’s not like Chucky.”
To be clear, Tkachuk has always played with a chip on his shoulder. That’s part of what makes him great. But Saturday felt different. The silence wasn’t competitive fire. It looked like something deeper—almost personal.
Panthers place Matthew Tkachuk on injured reserve with groin injury

The Florida Panthers will continue to be without Matthew Tkachuk going forward.
Florida placed its star forward on the injured reserve Sunday.
Tkachuk sustained a groin injury during the 4 Nations Face-Off while playing for Team USA.
It was not immediately clear whether he was placed on the traditional injured reserve or the long-term IR.
The injury has held Tkachuk out in all four of the Panthers’ games since returning from the break.
Tkachuk is second on the Panthers in scoring with 22 goals and 57 points over 52 games this season.
Florida also announced Sunday that it has recalled goaltender Chris Driedger from AHL Charlotte.
Dreidger hasn’t played in the NHL this year after signing with the Panthers as a free agent last off-season. However, in 2023-24 with the Seattle Kraken, he posted a .917 save percentage and 2.96 goals-against average in two games.
In the AHL this season, he has a 10-6-4 record, .878 save percentage and 2.97 goals-against average.
After beating the Calgary Flames on Saturday, Florida moved into first place in the Atlantic Division with a 37-21-3 record.
The Panthers next play Monday against the Tampa Bay Lightning.
