South Carolina women’s basketball coach Dawn Staley has pledged her entire $3 million in prize money and sponsorship earnings to help victims of the devastating floods that tore through central Texas last month.
The floods have left entire communities in ruins and claimed the lives of at least 28 people, including several children. Thousands remain displaced, with many living in shelters or makeshift camps as recovery efforts continue.
Staley, one of the most respected figures in women’s basketball, made the announcement quietly through a relief foundation based in Houston. But the news quickly spread, drawing admiration from fans, players, and humanitarian organizations across the country.
“I witnessed the struggles of homelessness firsthand growing up,” Staley shared in a statement. “I always promised myself that if I ever had the chance, I’d give back. No one should be forced to sleep on the streets.”
More Than a Coach
This donation is just the latest example of Staley’s deep-rooted commitment to service and social justice. Long known for her outspoken advocacy for racial equity, education, and underserved communities, she has consistently used her platform to uplift those in need.
Staley’s $3 million contribution is already being deployed by local organizations to fund emergency housing, clean water access, food distribution, and trauma counseling services. The funds are also being used to support rebuilding efforts in several of the hardest-hit areas, including Waco, Killeen, and parts of Travis and Bell Counties.
