Joyce Edwards shines on the court, but her foundation is built on family. Dawn Staley praises her as “a unique athlete of her generation,” attributing her success to the profound impact of her upbringing.
The Gamecocks are going for their fourth national title in the last five years

Natalie Norris, Joyce Edwards’ coach at Camden High School, did not hesitate to point out that “she is a unique athlete of her generation”, and she has seen a long list of players pass through the school’s courts.
Edwards managed to make the McDonald’s All-American team of his generation, something the school had probably never seen before in its history, making it a unique moment, similar to what he achieved with the South Carolina quintet with which he advanced to the final of the women’s basketball tournament of the NCAA.
The school was known for producing some players who have excelled in the NFL such as Vonnie Holliday, Charles Bennett and Bobby Engram, but Edwards was something else.
“It’s a true testament to the historical greatness of his career,” Norris said.
A few months later, Edwards was playing with the South Carolina Gamecocks, making her way into the Rookie of the Year conversation. Her story is one of loyalty, determination and talent. And she never had to leave home to prove it.
Joyce Edwards’ parents are John and LaToya Edwards
Joyce’s mother is Rasheedah Edwards, who is an engineer and mother of three children: Don, Joyce and Tyler, and is the best support for the Gamecock player at all times.
When Joyce broke down in tears after receiving her McDonald’s All-American jersey, she thanked her family.
Although Rasheedah has supported her throughout, she wished Joyce would stay close to home, and the guard had no hesitation in saying: “My home was in my backyard”, when referring to the closeness of home to her current school.
Joyce’s father, Charlie Edwards, is also an engineer who stays out of the spotlight and not much is known about him, but that does not mean he has not played an important part in his daughter’s success.
Charlie and Rasheedah Edwards are American, and their daughter put Camden, South Carolina, on the national map before playing on Dawn Staley’s team.
No matter how far she goes, Joyce’s journey will always be tied to her home.
Although she is an excellent player, Joyce Edwards‘ parents placed equal importance on her studies.

“School is always first. Even in my family, I couldn’t play sports without getting good grades, and I think my parents just instilled that in me,” Joyce said in April last year.
Joyce Edwards has always had a natural talent, but it was her family that gave her the strength to achieve greatness. Now, she has taken that same determination to South Carolina. And she’s just getting started.
