Bonilla scores game-high 19 points in exhibition loss at Iowa

Alyssa Bonilla and Tiani Ellison lead Griffs in scoring against the Hawkeyes.

IOWA CITY, Ia. – Alyssa Bonilla scored a game-high 19 points and Missouri Western women’s basketball knocked down 11 three-pointers, but the Griffons lost at Division I powerhouse University of Iowa Wednesday, 110-55, in an exhibition at Carver Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City. The place was packed with a reported attendance of 14,998.

The Griffons shot 17-of-61 (27.9%) from the field and 11-of-42 from three (26.2%). Nine different Missouri Western players cracked the scoring column. Tiani Ellison had 11, including a 3-of-4 effort long range. Bonilla was 4-of-5 from downtown. Ellison also blocked two shots. Bonilla and Jessica Ford each led the team with four rebounds. Bonilla had a team-best two steals.

“I’m proud of our kids,” head coach Ashton Feldhaus said. “I thought they competed the whole time. I told them to just enjoy it, because it’s once in a lifetime. It’s exactly what we wanted it to be. A great experience for our kids. I think we had a blast to be honest.”

Iowa shot 52.9% from the field and hit 12 threes of their own. Teagan Mallegni and Hannah Stuelke led the Hawkeyes with 18 points each. Defensively, Missouri Western turned Iowa over 15 times and score eight points off of those. The Griffons finished with seven total steals and three total blocked shots.

Missouri Western opens the season for real on Friday, Nov. 8 in the Central Region Women’s Basketball Showcase at Civic Arena in St. Joseph. The Griffons face Sioux Falls on Nov. 8 at 7:30 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on the Griffon Sports Network (Varsity Network App, GoGriffons.com/listen) and will be available to stream on the MIAA Network.
