Fans of Caitlin Clark are up in arms after ESPN overlooked her in their list of top five women’s college basketball players – a move that also drew criticism from WNBA legend Sue Bird.

Clark has been nothing short of phenomenal in the WNBA, having risen through the ranks at Iowa Hawkeyes during her college years and smashing numerous records on her journey to the professional league. The all-time top scorer in NCAA history was picked first in the 2024 Draft by Indiana Fever and has since been a standout performer in the WNBA.

The 23-year-old won Rookie of the Year and was named Time magazine’s Athlete of the Year despite not clinching the championship title in her debut year – an honor that went to New York Liberty in 2024. During her stint with Iowa, Clark set the record for the most points scored in NCAA history (3,951) and in a single season (1,234).

She also topped Division One in scoring, assists, and three-pointers multiple times throughout her career. However, despite her extraordinary college basketball career marked by record-breaking performances, ESPN controversially omitted the young point guard from their list of the top five greatest athletes in college basketball.

In a surprising move, the network excluded Clark entirely from the list because she didn’t secure a championship title during her college years – even though she led Iowa to back-to-back title games.

ESPN correspondent Ari Chambers said: “In the open, we said, ‘What makes a top-five player? Winning. The only thing, the only strike against Caitlin Clark, is that she has not won a National Championship.

“And that is the only thing that you can put against her because the way that she has dominated the record books when she was at Iowa was something you could put duplicate. … But how can you be a top-five player if you have not won a title?”.

The decision to exclude Clark from ESPN’s list left viewers scratching their heads, especially since her name headlined the YouTube video’s title. One irked fan said: “They might have overlooked the fact that UConn and South Carolina etc get 99% of the talent. The fact she made Iowa relevant is a feat in of itself. The CC hate is all jealousy”, while another chimed in: “ESPN is trying to erase our GOAT Caitlin Clark. Call out this sick agenda for what it is.”

Another viewer pointed out: “What??? That is NUTS. She is THE best women’s basketball player of all time.”

WNBA icon Sue Bird also expressed disbelief over ESPN’s omission of Clark during her ‘A Touch More’ podcast, where she discussed the Fever guard’s lack of a significant championship.

Bird said: “Listen, I think the way that I’m looking at this – no, Caitlin didn’t win (a title); it’s why she’s not No. 1 (on the list).

“I think going to the national championship game two years in a row, basically playing big in every big game, hitting every big shot in every big moment – there’s something to that clearly.

“[She’s] obviously special, definitely one of the greatest of all time. And I think when I really look at lists like this, it’s kind of like, do you go based on just resumé, or do you based on if we had a draft, who would you take? And there’s no way you’re not taking Caitlin Clark in the top five. And to me, there’s no way you’re not taking her in the top three.”
