It looks like change is finally coming for the Boston Bruins, as an NHL insider has revealed Don Sweeney’s fate with the team moving forward and it looks like they are ready to move on from him.
With how disappointing this season has been, and Don Sweeney going on a fire sale during the NHL trade deadline, it seems like the team is ready to move on from him.
Fans have been calling for Don Sweeney and Cam Neely to be fired by the organization all year long, and “Fire Sweeney” chants have broken out multiple times during games this season.
Especially after he traded Brad Marchand to the Florida Panthers during the NHL trade deadline, and only got a conditional first-round pick back.
Now it seems like the Bruins are ready to make some change.
Boston Bruins Set To Fire Don Sweeney Following Recent Statement
NHL insider Pierre LeBrun recently revealed that it’s looking like the Boston Bruins are ready to fire long-time General Manager Don Sweeney.
“There’s not been any word either way and that in itself has created a bit of noise… he’s entering the final year of his contract next year, he’s been there 10 years and that’s a long time.
It’s been a very disappointing year. He had a very aggressive trade deadline… and got a lot of praise from GM’s around the league about the return on those deals so we’ll see what that means for his future in Boston.”
If the Boston Bruins are entering a full on rebuild, Don Sweeney is definitely not the guy you want to have as your General Manager.
But there is some speculation throughout the organization that the Bruins are going to try and re-tool during the off-season instead of rebuilding, and try to take one more run at a Stanley Cup.
Don Sweeney’s contract officially comes to an end in the 2026 off-season, so he has one more year with the team unless he is fired, but this upcoming season may be his last with the organization.
