Jon Cooper hints at controversial goaltending decision.
Is Team Canada on the verge of making a very big mistake at the Four Nations Face Off?
Short of Canada outright winning the Four Nations Face-Off, there is sure to be plenty of discussion over how the country’s goaltending has been handled throughout this tournament and in the weeks and months leading up to it.
Canada’s management team was heavily scrutinized over the decisions they made regarding which goaltenders they would be bringing to the Four Nations Face-Off, with perhaps the most notable controversy surrounding the decision not to bring in goaltender Logan Thompson despite him having a great deal of success in the National Hockey League this season.
Now through two games at the Four Nations Face-Off the Canadians have received questionable goaltending from goaltender Jordan Binnington, with Binnington allowing at least one soft goal in both of his starts for Canada thus far. Through two games Binnington has recorded a 2.41 goals against average and a .896 save percentage and those relatively mediocre numbers have led to many questioning whether or not a goaltending change is in order for Canada.
Those hoping to see a goaltending change happen before Monday’s crucial game against Finland may end up being sorely disappointed however with all signs pointing to yet another controversial decision from Canada’s staff regarding their goaltending. In spite of Binnington’s struggles, all signs appear to be pointing to Jordan Binnington once again getting the net on Monday when Canada plays Finland with their tournament lives on the line.
Both Adin Hill and Samuel Montembeault were on the ice for Canada’s optional skate on Sunday, an indication that Binnington will get the net again on Monday.
Habs insider Eric Engels, who was on hand for that skate, indicated he believes Binnington is headed for the start on Monday as well.
Is Jon Cooper making the right call here? Or should someone else get the start on Monday? Let me know your thoughts in the comments.
