A new scenario sparks wild speculation about what a future blockbuster involving the Leafs captain could look like.
A bold new idea from Jeff Marek is adding even more intrigue to the future of Auston Matthews in Toronto.
Speaking about the evolving direction of the Toronto Maple Leafs under new leadership, Marek floated a scenario that immediately caught attention across the hockey world. One that would see the franchise potentially exploring a blockbuster decision involving its captain.
“If John Chayka and Mats Sundin decide, okay look we’ve got Gavin McKenna, if we look to take Auston Matthews to market… personally I would look at Utah,” Marek said on DMase Vingan & Daunic, pointing to a possible framework where Toronto evaluates its long-term direction based on a changing roster landscape.

The comments come at a time when the Leafs are already undergoing significant internal evaluation. New general manager John Chayka is actively shaping the organization’s future vision, with senior advisor Mats Sundin also involved in discussions about the team’s direction.
Toronto’s recent draft lottery win has only intensified those conversations, with a potential franchise-altering prospect now in play as part of the club’s long-term planning. That development is seen as a key piece in how the organization will approach its core players moving forward.
For now, Matthews remains central to everything the Leafs are building. However, his future is already being discussed more openly than at any point in recent years, especially as the team navigates another pivotal offseason after a disappointing campaign.
Marek’s suggestion is not a confirmed plan, but it highlights how quickly the conversation around Toronto’s franchise cornerstone can shift, and have fans imagined where Matthews could land.
