Toronto Maple Leafs superstar Auston Matthews is known for his lethal wrist shot and unmatched on-ice presence—but this week, he’s making headlines for something even more heartwarming.
In a move that has melted hearts across the globe, Matthews announced a $7 million personal investment in building what he calls a “paradise” for rescued stray dogs, a sanctuary and adoption haven aimed at giving thousands of abandoned puppies a second chance at love.
A Dream Born from Compassion
The NHL All-Star revealed the plan in an emotional video shared to his social media accounts, where he appeared alongside several rescued dogs, some of whom had been living in shelters for years.
“These animals didn’t ask for this life, but they still greet you with love,” Matthews said. “I want to give them the kind of life they deserve—a place that feels like home from the moment they arrive.”
Dubbed “Pawsitive Paradise,” the state-of-the-art facility will be built on a sprawling 50-acre property just outside of Toronto. The project will include:
Climate-controlled living quarters for over 1,000 dogs
On-site veterinary care and rehabilitation spaces
Spacious, secure play zones and walking trails
A training center to help dogs become more adoptable
A café and visitor center to encourage community interaction and adoptions
Not Just Shelter—A Future
What sets Pawsitive Paradise apart is its mission: not just to house stray dogs, but to heal and rehome them. Matthews emphasized that the sanctuary will serve as both a long-term care facility and an active adoption hub, with resources dedicated to matching dogs with loving families and educating the public about responsible pet ownership.
“This isn’t a shelter—it’s a fresh start,” Matthews said. “Every dog that comes through those gates will feel love, safety, and hope. That’s the goal.”
Fans and Fellow Athletes Applaud
The announcement sent social media into a frenzy, with hashtags like #MatthewsForMutts and #PawsitiveParadise trending within hours.
“From goals to golden hearts, Auston is the real MVP,” one fan tweeted.
“This is what using your platform looks like. Absolute class,” added another.
Fellow NHL players and celebrities also chimed in. Connor McDavid praised the move as “inspiring,” while tennis star Serena Williams posted, “This is the kind of leadership the world needs.”
Opening Date and Volunteer Opportunities
Pawsitive Paradise is expected to break ground this fall, with an official opening date projected for late 2026. Matthews confirmed that he will personally cover the operating costs for the first three years and plans to be actively involved in the organization’s development.
Volunteer programs, adoption events, and donor partnerships will be announced in the coming months. Matthews also hinted at a possible annual charity hockey game, with proceeds benefiting the sanctuary.
