A’ja Wilson clapped back at Aliyah Boston after the Indiana Fever star center argued that she routinely receives a “special whistle” from WNBA officials.
In the absence of Caitlin Clark — who is ineligible to compete in the postseason after the Fever left her off the playoff roster — Boston has stepped up to carry the load on offense.
During Game 4 of the semifinals, she amassed 24 points, 14 rebounds, five steals, two steals and two blocks while propelling Indiana to a 90-83 win over the Las Vegas Aces.
Wilson, meanwhile, turned in an equally strong showing on Sunday, recording 31 points, nine rebounds, four steals, three blocks and three assists on 14-of-24 shooting from the field.
Addressing Boston’s dominant performance during a postgame press conference, Wilson swiftly pointed out that the 23-year-old took 13 free throws, while she was only shot from the line six times.
When asked why the Fever found so much success feeding Boston, Wilson replied: “I don’t know, you’re gonna have to ask Aliyah that question.

“You just do your work. You gotta do your work early and make it different. But Aliyah did say I have a special whistle, and she shot 13 [free throws] today.
Upon being pressed further about Boston’s alleged comments, Wilson added: “Yeah. She said it last game, I had a special whistle. Which is cool. So you just gotta play better defense, make her looks a little difficult, and kind of go from there.”

Though Boston didn’t appear to publicly claim that Wilson gets preferential treatment from referees, she did acknowledge that it’s regularly anyone’s guess as to how officials will call a WNBA game.
“It’s kind of hard to talk about physicality because you don’t really know how it’s going to be called,” she told reporters following last Thursday’s practice.
“Like, it all depends on the call because it can be physical but then there’s every call, or it can be physical and there’s no call. So you really just have to see how it’s gonna be, and you can’t really figure that out until [the game].”
Discussing the challenge of guarding Wilson, Boston added: “I think her getting that amount of shots, that’s gonna be up to her… But I think for us, just continuing to be in her space, crowd her space.
“But also, we have to accept that we’re professionals. Like, people are gonna hit shots, people are gonna hit tough shots. So if they hit it, take the ball out and push it out on them.”
Wilson and Boston will duke it out one last time in this year’s playoffs when the Fever take on the Aces in Las Vegas for a pivotal Game 5 with a trip to the WNBA Finals on the line.
