While the Chicago Sky battle the Washington Mystics and Atlanta Dream for the last spot in the WNBA playoffs, injured star Angel Reese is fighting a much different opponent: the reality of her past.

During a recording of her podcast, Unapologetically Angel, Reese was stunned when a producer asked her to sign an old picture that revealed how she used to look before she became the “Chi Town Barbie.”

WNBA embraces trend of signing old photos

By confronting her past, Reese participated in a trend that has been sweeping through sports teams on social media, where players are asked to sign embarrassing old photos of themselves.

Diana Taurasi and Brittany Griner’s incredible reactions to their former selves helped the Phoenix Mercury kickstart the trend in the WNBA. Naturally, the Indiana Fever made their own version as well, featuring a furious Aliyah Boston and a surprising reaction from Caitlin Clark.

In Reese’s case, she shared the humbling experience with friends rather than teammates. Recording artists Latto and Mariah the Scientist joined Reese to record Episode 3 of her brand new show, and they also had to see cringey old flicks of themselves.

Reese’s big insecurity

Angel certainly did not enjoy seeing pictures of her younger, less polished self. These days, Reese is a Met Gala attendee, a fashion icon, and a magazine cover star, most recently this week with Sports Illustrated.

?”Oh no! Absolutely not,” she said in shock on her first look at the outdated image. “This is ewww. Y’all need to delete this!”

Although the Unapologetically Show account did not share the photo in full, you could see in the video of Angel’s reaction what appeared to be her in a bright green tank top at a basketball tournament. One particular accessory caught her eye.

“I used to always wear my glasses. I didn’t like myself without glasses,” she remembered, as the photo took her down memory lane.

In 2024, Reese is more in the market for Cartier frames. But the trending video was a great reminder that you can’t forget where you come from.
