Brad Marchand is no stranger to playoff clashes with the Toronto Maple Leafs, boasting an undefeated record against them from his time with the Boston Bruins. Having helped oust the Leafs in four seven-game series in 2013, 2018, 2019, and 2024, Marchand now finds himself in new colors with the Florida Panthers. This time, he’s facing a transformed Toronto team with a fresh identity, structure, and play style.
Reflecting on the recent 4-3 loss to Toronto in Game 2 of their second-round series, Marchand observed, “They’re continuing to get better and grow as a group.” He noted the strategic additions the Leafs made at the trade deadline and offseason, which have bolstered their defense.
“They’re heavy back there,” he praised, acknowledging the impact of a new coaching direction with Craig Berube at the helm. The Leafs have traded their historically offensive-heavy strategy for a more balanced, defensively robust game, and the early results are promising—they hold a 2-0 series lead as the battle moves to Florida for Games 3 and 4.

Many pegged Toronto as underdogs against the reigning champions, but the Panthers find themselves confronting a Leafs squad that’s pressing all the right buttons. Down two games and facing a revamped defensive front, the task at hand is a daunting one for the Panthers.
“They don’t give up a whole lot around the net,” Marchand admitted, acutely aware of the solid positioning and execution that Toronto has brought to the table. “We knew it was going to be a really tough battle; we didn’t expect to roll over them.”
Toronto’s ability to inflict damage off the rush and pounce on narrow openings has been on full display in the series so far, as they netted nine goals against Sergei Bobrovsky in the first two outings. Their knack for seizing the moment has tested the Panthers’ defensive resolve, requiring near-perfect coverage to snuff out Toronto’s offensive sparks.
“Their biggest threat is that they’re very good on the rush. You gotta be above them.
It seemed like every time we gave them the opportunity, they created something or they capitalized on it,” Marchand warned.
Marchand himself hasn’t been sitting idly; he’s been pivotal for the Panthers, contributing a goal and two assists in the opening games against Toronto, bringing his playoff tally to seven points in seven games. But with the series far from settled, overcoming a Leafs team clicking at the right moment is a formidable challenge. For Florida to flip the script, they’ll have to match Toronto’s intensity and exploit the opportunities that come their way.
