NHL star Brad Marchand, known for his gritty play on the ice, proved that his heart is just as strong off it. The incident, which occurred on a chilly afternoon in downtown Boston, has since gone viral, inspiring millions with its unexpected act of kindness.
While driving through a quiet neighborhood, Marchand noticed an elderly woman digging through a dumpster behind a local grocery store. Her frail figure, weathered by years of hardship, was a stark contrast to the bustling city around her. For a moment, Marchand, a professional athlete with millions of fans and a reputation for his tough playing style, simply watched. But instead of continuing on his way, he was overcome with a sense of responsibility.
Without hesitation, Marchand parked his car and approached the woman. After introducing himself, he learned that she was struggling to make ends meet after a series of unfortunate events had left her homeless. She was searching for food to get by, relying on scraps from the garbage.
What happened next shocked onlookers. Rather than offering just money or a quick fix, Marchand invited the woman into his car and took her to a nearby restaurant. He treated her to a hot meal and made sure she had everything she needed, including a promise to connect her with local resources for shelter and care.
Marchand didn’t stop there. He later used his platform to raise awareness about homelessness and pledged to donate a portion of his next paycheck to local shelters.
The incident not only humanized the celebrated athlete but also reminded everyone that true kindness often comes in the most unexpected forms. In a world that can feel disconnected, Marchand’s selfless act proved that compassion has no boundaries.
All for grandma: Brad Marchand’s roller coaster weekend
For some players, they spend their Friday nights out with teammates, but for Boston Bruins captain Brad Marchand, not only were he and his teammates flying to Toronto following a win over the San Jose Sharks, but he had just received some heavy news: he had received news that his maternal grandmother had passed away, according to Amalie Benjamin of NHL.com.
Many players would take a leave of absence to be with their family, and Marchand very well could soon or further down the road, but as a leader he decided to push through and play anyways and to say it didn’t affect his play is putting it mildly.
In Saturday night’s game against the Toronto Maple Leafs, the Bruins were nearly forced to take it to a shootout again like last time, but instead Marchand played spoiler and scored the overtime winner in the game with 7.2 seconds remaining in the extra frame despite the Maple Leafs tying it with under six seconds remaining in regulation.
Then Marchand continued to use his momentum from this game into the game on Sunday against the Columbus Blue Jackets.
On Sunday, not only was Boston able to pull off a 3-1 victory over the Blue Jackets, but Marchand tallied a natural hat-trick in the game, the third in Bruins’ history behind Patrice Bergeron and Jake DeBrusk.
While it remains to be seen whether or not Marchand takes some time away from the team, it will definitely do the captain some good to know that the team does not play again until Thursday night and that their next two games are at home.
