Sky Forward Angel Reese Drops Big Update on How Long Her Recovery Will Be.
After announcing she suffered a season-ending wrist injury against the Los Angeles Sparks on Friday, Chicago Sky rookie forward Angel Reese took to TikTok to set the record straight on a few things regarding how it happened and what exactly her injury is.
Reese disclosed that she suffered a hairline fracture in her right wrist after falling on her hand. It appears the injury happened with less than four minutes to go in the fourth quarter against L.A. after she was fouled by Crystal Dangerfield while grabbing an offensive rebound and attempting a layup.
The 22-year-old missed Chicago’s 92-77 win over the Dallas Wings on Sunday and she’ll sit out the team’s final five regular-season games as well plus any playoff games should they qualify for the postseason.
But some good news for Sky fans: Reese revealed how long her timetable is for her recovery, and it’s not as bad as many initially feared.
“I’m getting surgery on Tuesday,” Reese stated. “I’m going to be in a hard cast for four weeks and then I’m going to be in a soft case two weeks then [remove it], then I’m back. So, six weeks I’ll be back to doing my own thing, normal life.”
Reese could have let the injury heal on its own, but she disclosed that wasn’t feasible given the short- and long-term ramifications of doing so.
“The risk of not having surgery is I could have arthritis at 22 years old — that wasn’t an option,” she stated. “The bone could literally crack and shatter. Right now, it’s like a hairline…not even that big, but they’re going to put a small little screw in it. Long-term, I could’ve not played anymore because my bone…this is a very hard place to heal because the blood flow is slim to none, so that wasn’t an option.”
Reese ends her rookie season having set a new WNBA rookie record for the most single-season double-doubles (26), and she also broke several other records including most consecutive double-doubles (15), most single-season rebounds (446), most single-season rebounds per game (13.1) and the most consecutive games with 20 or more rebounds (three), and she also broke .
