Legendary University of Connecticut women’s basketball coach Geno Auriemma has shown extraordinary support following a devastating accident that claimed the lives of an entire family from Houston last weekend.
The Tragedy
A catastrophic collision occurred Saturday afternoon on Interstate 45 near Farm-to-Market Road 977 in Leon County, when a southbound Dodge truck veered off the roadway, struck a guardrail, crossed the median, and vaulted over the cable barrier before colliding head-on with a northbound Ford truck. The impact caused both vehicles to burst into flames.
The crash claimed the lives of all five family members in the Ford truck, identified as Hermenegildo Melendez, 55; Veronica Cerda, 53; Veronica Denise Cerda, 26; Rebecca Cerda, 20; and Daniela Cerda, 18. All victims were pronounced deceased at the scene.
A Personal Connection
Sources close to Coach Auriemma revealed that 18-year-old Daniela Cerda had been an avid basketball player at her high school in Houston and had dreams of one day playing college basketball. She reportedly kept newspaper clippings of UConn women’s basketball victories and had attended a basketball camp where Auriemma had once made a guest appearance.

When news of the tragic accident reached the coach, he was visibly shaken. “There’s basketball, and then there’s life,” Auriemma told reporters. “What happened to the Cerda and Melendez family reminds us all of what really matters.”
An Unexpected Gesture
In a move that has touched the hearts of many, Coach Auriemma announced that he would personally cover all funeral expenses for the family. Additionally, he has established a memorial scholarship in Daniela Cerda’s name at the University of Connecticut, specifically for young women basketball players from underprivileged backgrounds who show dedication both on the court and in the classroom.
“Daniela had dreams that will never be realized,” Auriemma stated at a press conference yesterday. “The least we can do is help other young women with similar dreams achieve what she couldn’t.”
The coach also revealed plans to travel to Houston next week to meet with extended family members and the community that has been devastated by this loss.
Community Response
The response to Auriemma’s gesture has been overwhelming. UConn players, past and present, have pledged to participate in a memorial game, with all proceeds going to support the extended family of the victims.
Maria Gonzalez, a cousin of the Cerda family, expressed her gratitude through tears: “We never expected this kind of support from someone of Coach Auriemma’s stature. The family loved basketball, especially Daniela. This means more than words can express.”
Beyond Sports
Sports analysts note that this is not the first time Auriemma has shown extraordinary compassion off the court, but this particular gesture stands out for its spontaneity and depth.
“What makes Geno special isn’t just his coaching record,” noted longtime sports journalist Thomas Reynolds. “It’s these moments of humanity that truly define his legacy.”
Social media has been flooded with messages of support, with the hashtag #CerdaStrong trending nationwide. Many fans have admitted to being moved to tears by the coach’s gesture.
As the basketball community and the nation mourn alongside the extended family and friends of the victims, Coach Auriemma’s actions serve as a powerful reminder that the impact of sports figures can extend far beyond the game, bringing comfort and support in moments of unimaginable tragedy.
The first memorial service for the family is scheduled for this coming Saturday in Houston, with Coach Auriemma expected to attend.
