Caitlin Clark’s $28 million signature shoe in the works as Nike start work on exclusive line.
Towards the end of the record-breaking season Caitlin Clark set in her final year in college, Nike focused their marketing on her. At the time, she was set to go to the WNBA as the No. 1 overall pick. Knowing that the sportswear giant wanted to push her into the global limelight.
Then came her draft and the Indiana Fever made her a part of their organization. That decision saw basketball fans clamoring for season tickets. Nike witnessed her impact up close when Fever jersey’s bearing the No. 22 sold out within an hour.
After the draft, news came in that the conglomerate reached a deal with her for 8 years and $28 million. That deal was the richest contract in women’s basketball history and fans waited for Nike to announce her signature shoe.
However, that deal immediately saw many fans asking why then two-time MVP and back-to-back champion A’ja Wilson, another Nike exclusive athlete did not have a signature shoe of her own. The organization switched gears and worked on a new deal with Wilson and announced she would have her own shoe in 2025.
All those critics were pacified, but as the season continued, fans noticed that Nike did not announce Clark’s signature shoe. The WNBA Rookie of the Year continued to wear Kobe 6’s to almost all her games. Along with it, the conglomerate signed other athletes to contracts.
Nike finally working on Caitlin Clark signature shoe
Now that Caitlin Clark is in her first official WNBA offseason, she has ensured she gives time to those things she could not do in the past year. She was at The Annika Pro-Am tournament wearing a custom gold Nike spike as fans thronged to watch her.
Along with that, the Indiana Fever superstar has been working to improve her game. Now it seems she is working with Nike to design and develop her first signature shoe. When new CEO Elliott Hill was speaking with Fortune Magazine, he revealed this.
We had Caitlin Clark here today. She was in yesterday working on her signature shoe that will launch. And we’re working on the design of her logo.
Nike CEO Elliott Hill said
This means, fans can finally hope for a Caitlin Clark signature shoe. When it will launch is unknown. But judging by how long it takes from the design phase to public release, it could either release at the end of this year or next.
With the way her Wilson signature basketball’s sell out along with her leading the WNBA’s merchandise sales, Nike could easily recoup the $28 million they are giving her. Elliott Hill is expecting Clark to impact sales the same way Michael Jordan‘s Jordan brand does.
