Chiefs Face Defining Offseason After Super Bowl Loss

The Kansas City Chiefs have a mountain of work to do this offseason to keep its stars heading to free agency and also to solidify several positions of need.

For so long, the Kansas City Chiefs have been the gold standard in the NFL, and the Super Bowl loss to the Philadelphia Eagles might have brought down the curtain on the greatest dynasty talk.

But more than that, this offseason is looming as a key one for general manager Brett Veach and head coach Andy Reid. Multiple areas need addressing, and so too do the futures of several starters, most notably guard Trey Smith.

With so many moves to make, we aren’t sure if the Chiefs will be able to make them all, and that could leave the franchise short-changed despite having Patrick Mahomes.

And as CBS Sports’ Jordan Dajani writes, the Chiefs have a mountain of work to do this offseason.

“I’m not trying to claim the Chiefs’ Super Bowl window is closing, but they have some tough decisions to make this offseason,” Dajani writes. “Retaining talent is just as important as some of the improvements Kansas City will look to make. Both objectives will not be easy.”

With the Chiefs receivers in Juju Smith-Schuster, DeAndre Hopkins and Marquise Brown set to free agency, coupled with Trey Smith, Nick Bolton and Justin Reid all expected to test the market, that’s a lot of firepower that could go out the door.

Smith is expected to be one of the most sought-after free agents, so too is Bolton, and then we have the receiver and offensive line, both of which need to be strengthened this offseason.

Chiefs’ Offseason Focused On Filling 1 Need

Having kept the franchise in a position to win the Super Bowl for the last seven consecutive seasons, one would suggest so, but with the amount of money needed to keep its stars, coupled with the need to bring players in and strengthen, it will be a delicate balancing act for Veach and Kansas City.

And it’s one they can’t afford to mess up.
