Sidney Crosby says he will never let Marc-Andre Fleury live this down.
Sidney Crosby and Marc-Andre Fleury have been friends for a very long time and with that friendship comes a healthy and friendly rivalry, so you knew that tonight’s game between Crosby’s Pittsburgh Penguins and Fleury’s Minnesota Wild was going to mean a great deal to both men.
It is presumably the last time that the two men will face one another in the National Hockey League, with no other games between the Wild and the Penguins this season and Fleury set to retire at the end of the season, and unfortunately for Fleury it will be his friend who gets the last laugh.
Not only were the Penguins victorious over the Wild on Sunday, but Crosby himself would beat his friend with a goal in the third period. The goal gave the Penguins at 2-0 lead at the time and according to Crosby himself, Fleury was reportedly furious about the fact that both he and Penguins forward Evgeni Malkin had been the two players to score on him.
“I could hear him after the second goal, he wasn’t happy,” said Crosby smiling from ear to ear. “We knew the circumstances obviously, great time playing together, it’s been a honor to play with him and against him all these years and what a job he’s done.”
There was no doubt that the moment meant a great deal to all of those involved, and Crosby admitted as much when speaking after the game.
“It was special and I’m glad we got to do it here today.”
Perhaps the most special part though is that Crosby now has the ultimate last laugh on his good friend Fleury, a man known for always getting the last laugh himself through a variety of well-crafted pranks.
“To get one there in the last game against him, I will remind him of that many times,” said Crosby.
