A day after Georgia coach’s comment, Iowa ‘sniper’ extends her late-season surge with five 3-pointers in the Hawkeyes’ second-round NCAA win.
IOWA CITY — Gabbie Marshall has more than “cute eyes, pretty eyes.”
She has a shooter’s eyes.
Marshall continued her late-season outside-shooting tear Sunday, knocking down five 3-pointers (in eight attempts) in Iowa’s 74-66 NCAA women’s basketball tournament second-round win over Georgia on Sunday at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
“We talked about in-and-out 3-pointers … moving and rotating the ball,” Marshall said.
A senior from Cincinnati (she already has committed to come back for a fifth year next season), Marshall has stormed back from an early-season slump.
In the first 22 games, she hit just 19 of 80 long-range shots (23.8 percent).
In the last 12 contests: 33 of 56 (58.9 percent).
Marshall keyed the Hawkeyes (27-6) early, hitting her first four shots behind the arc.
“I knew I was hot,” Marshall said. “Get it to me.”
In Saturday’s press conference, Georgia Coach Katie Abrahamson-Henderson referred to Marshall as “the cute little one with the … cute eyes, pretty eyes.”
That got back to Marshall later Saturday.
“I didn’t know how to take that,” Marshall said. “I kind of had mixed emotions.
“Caitlin (Clark) sent it to the group chat, like, ‘She doesn’t know our names.’
“I’m like, ‘Forget it, who cares. She called me Pretty Eyes.’”
For the record, Marshall said her eyes are “hazelish-green.” In the new world of NIL, this might be an opportunity.
“Yeah, maybe some kind of makeup,” she said. “I don’t wear contacts, so it won’t be that.”
Whether you agree with Abrahamson-Henderson’s take on Marshall’s eyes is up to you.
But these days, the way Marshall is shooting, this much is accurate:
“She’s a sniper,” Abrahamson-Henderson said.
The third-ranked Hawkeyes head to Seattle for a Sweet 16 matchup Friday against Duke or Colorado.
