If you had to name the top 5 college basketball coaches with the most animated sideline reactions, well, Dawn Staley would absolutely be up there.
No debate. And that same vibe carries over to her social media, too. She’s out here hyping her new players, clapping back at media outlets, and basically living her best online life. She’s not one of those coaches who post once every three months and dip. Dawn is very much online, for better or worse.
Now, before we get to why we said ‘for worse,’ let’s talk about how any frustration that Gamecocks fans had about losing MiLaysia Fulwiley turned into a full-blown fear once the rumors started.
And not just any rumors, ones that said LSU Tigers ( South Carolina’s biggest SEC rivals right now) were about to snatch her up from the portal. And just like that, it actually turned real, and the 2026 Tigers vs Gamecocks now looks a lot more interesting. Fulwiley, the superstar guard who spent two seasons lighting it up for the Gamecocks and Coach Staley, officially announced on April 25 that she’s taking her talents to LSU.
Now, for a little history. South Carolina and LSU have been building a bit of a rivalry lately. During the 2023-24 season, LSU almost gave the Gamecocks their first L in Baton Rouge. South Carolina had to pull off a furious fourth-quarter comeback just to keep that undefeated dream alive. And if you think it ended there, it didn’t. These two clashed again at the SEC Tournament Championship in Greenville, and it got ugly. A literal fight broke out, delaying the game for almost 20 minutes.

It all started when Fulwiley stole the ball from LSU’s Flau’jae Johnson. Johnson fouled her to stop the play, Ashlyn Watkins celebrated a little too close to Johnson, and… chaos. Kamilla Cardoso ended up shoving Johnson to the floor, and the whole thing exploded from there. And just so you know, Fulwiley wasn’t just some side character in that drama; she dropped 24 points and bagged the SEC Tournament MVP.
Fast forward to this past season, LSU came to Columbia and got handed a 66-56 loss. Fulwiley still dropped a cool 15 points in that game, by the way. Now, with Coach Kim Mulkey keeping Flau’jae Johnson and Mikaylah Williams, and adding Fulwiley to the mix, LSU’s got a Big 3 brewing.
But, while everyone was losing their minds about Fulwiley’s move, the internet found itself distracted by something else…Coach Staley. Remember how we said she’s super active on social media? Well, that sometimes backfires. A fan recently claimed they asked why Staley didn’t at least wish MiLaysia good luck or congratulate her publicly, and Staley blocked them. The fan even dropped a screenshot of the block.
Look, it’s her personal account. She can do what she wants, sure. But that’s surely gonna get people talking.
Dawn Staley faces heat over blocking fans on social media
One fan said, “Once again she is not a coach that has any real accountability.” Lay was a huge part of Staley’s squad, not just some role player. Fans loved her energy, and even Staley had praised her importance multiple times. So when Fulwiley left, fans naturally expected at least a little clarification or some kind of farewell. But…crickets.
And while some defended Staley, saying most coaches don’t really give big goodbye speeches when players transfer, others weren’t buying that excuse. Another fan chimed in, calling out Staley straight up, “A coach who talks about accountability, but doesn’t do it herself. She’s petty and colors are showing.” Now, that hit hard because Staley has always pushed accountability as one of her main values. But now a lot of fans feel like she’s the one ducking accountability herself, and that trust she built with them is shaky at the moment.
One person added, “She blocked me too 😭” and they weren’t alone. The comments started flooding in with people sharing their own “I got blocked by Staley” stories. And you know, this isn’t even a first-time thing. Over the years, folks have been posting about how they got blocked just for questioning something she didn’t wanna deal with.
Remember when she blocked a Caitlin Clark fan page after naming Angel Reese her WNBA ROTY pick? Then another fan didn’t hold back, saying, “Milaysia left for a reason the lady a cry baby.”
So, after all the seniors graduated this year, Fulwiley was supposed to step into a bigger role. It was gonna be her time to shine. But then, Raven Johnson decides she’s coming back, and Staley pulls in Ta’Niya Latson from the portal. So it was looking like Fulwiley might not get the court time everyone expected. And many believed that when you’re that talented and still getting stuck behind others, it kinda makes sense she’d wanna move somewhere she can really grow.
Another fan tried to smooth things over a little, saying, “She probably felt like you were trolling.” Because if there’s one thing we know about Staley, it’s that she does NOT mess around with trolls or even legit media if she feels they’re being shady. Like, remember when South Carolina played UConn? The coach mentioned how all the hype was around Caitlin Clark last year, and now it’s Paige Bueckers.
Later, ESPN Women’s Hoops shared an article quoting her saying Paige’s narrative overshadowed South Carolina’s achievements, and Staley straight-up went to X (formerly Twitter) and blasted them. But this whole situation raises a big question. Instead of clapping back, why is she just blocking interactions? But anyway, right now, it doesn’t seem like we’re getting any big statements from Staley or MiLaysia. We’re all just sitting here waiting for that fiery matchup.
