Dawn Staley shows true colors with brutally honest UConn admission after natty defeat
Dawn Staley owned South Carolina’s blowout loss to UConn in the national title game, calling the Huskies “the standard” after a humbling 82-59 defeat in Tampa, Florida.
In a candid acknowledgment of her team’s performance, South Carolina head coach Dawn Staley admitted that the Gamecocks were thoroughly outplayed by UConn in the national championship game.
The Gamecocks fell 82-59 to the Huskies, ending their pursuit of consecutive NCAA women’s basketball titles. “They flat out beat us,” Staley stated, giving full credit to UConn’s execution on both ends of the court. “We tried to throw a lot at them, and they rose above it all. That’s what happens when you have super talented players. We’ve been on the other side of it, so we get it.”

The Gamecocks entered the championship game with high expectations, having dominated women’s college basketball over the past two seasons with a remarkable 74-1 record, including an undefeated 2023-24 season that culminated in their third national championship. This season, however, presented more challenges, as South Carolina experienced four losses and ultimately finished as runners-up to UConn.
UConn’s victory not only secured its 12th national championship – a record for any men’s or women’s college basketball program – but also reaffirmed its status as a powerhouse in the sport. Staley acknowledged this legacy, stating: “UConn’s been the standard. Any time you can get any wins you are breaking into moving ahead in the game… They had the better team this year. You don’t always win when you have the better team, but they did this year, and that’s what you’re supposed to do.”
The Huskies’ performance was bolstered by standout contributions from Azzi Fudd and freshman Sarah Strong, each scoring 24 points. UConn star Paige Bueckers tallied 17 points and six rebounds in her final game in a Huskies uniform.
Despite the disappointing end to their season, the future remains promising for South Carolina. While seniors Bree Hall, Sania Feagin, Te-Hina Paopao, and Sakima Walker will depart, the team is set to return most key players, including the anticipated comeback of injured Ashlyn Watkins.
Additionally, the Gamecocks will welcome a highly ranked freshman class, led by No. 4 recruit Agot Makeer. Coach Staley’s leadership, combined with a strong incoming roster, suggests that South Carolina will continue to be a formidable contender in the seasons to come.
Reflecting on the championship loss, Staley emphasized the need for resilience and growth. “We just have to get tougher,” she remarked. “I think all of our habits are showing up at the wrong time, and you can’t do that against a team like UConn.”
As the Gamecocks regroup and prepare for the future, their commitment to excellence and the foundation laid by Coach Staley position them well for continued success in women’s college basketball.
